Default Price to change Timing Belt

I got 116k miles on my stock civic lx 99 sedan and i was told to get a timing belt and water pump replaced.

Should i go and get it done?

Mr.Tire quoted me $1100 dollars for this.. is it really worth is and is there a place where i can take it for cheaper?

with that mileage you should. could always find a friend or someone that knows how to do it and pay them to save afew bucks. and if i was to bring it to someone i think around 3-500 is typical price in my area. prices vary and so do people who know how to do it lol.

Most honda specific shops will do it for $300-500. Might have to drive a little further but most mainstream or mom&pop places will stick a fork in your eye for a timing belt. Mostly because people pay for it and no other reason. Swapping a timing belt should only take a few hours.

It's dumb how some places price stuff. I got quoted $1200 and $1350 locally to swap my y7 tranny for a y8 tranny. I moved to Arizona and a honda specific shop did the transmission swap for $190. I think it was about $65 per hour for labor and it took them 3 hours to swap the transmission and install the new clutch etc. No stupid tax.

Make sure that when you are shopping around, you are getting a quote for a proper timing belt job and not a bargain basement job.

The timing belt doesn't just randomly fail, it usually fails because the other components on the timing belt wear out too. Make sure that when the timing belt is changed, the tensioner and spring are also changed. The water pump & gasket should also be changed. It's not mandatory, but it's a good idea. I don't know which engine is in your civic, but if it has any rollers for the timing belt, those should be changed as well.

I have yet to see a timing belt break because a tensioner was bad or a water pump seized up. All have just been belts that were way overdue. They do deteriorate over time. I always recommend you replace the water pump, cam and crank seals with OEM honda parts while you're in there though. Tensioners are expensive and rarely go bad, if it rolls freely i'd just leave it alone.

I had the local Honda dealer do one about 5 years ago, cost me about $400. Anything more than $500 I would keep shopping.

That's a good price, especially from a dealer.

So many places try to rob you just because of the "hype" behind a timing belt being a big job.

First of all, I would not let a tire place work on my engine.

Instead I would either go to a Honda Dealership, or an independent shop that specializes in or at least works on many Honda automobiles.

Around Chicago, most Honda dealerships charge 800 or 900 dollars for the job, and most independent shops seem to charge 500 to 600 dollars for the job.

don't take it to mr. tire. they will try to get every cent from you. they'll try to charge you for a new mount while doing the timing belt.

*edit, oh, forgot to say, stay away from chain stores, ie mr. tire, sears, etc. raping you in the *** is what they will do to you.

Just do it yourself. It wil give you the piece of mind that it was done right, not hurried just to get the job out of the shop.

I seriously doubt you will find anywhere that will do it for less than 500 dollars.
