Power Steering Out, Manual Rack In???
I have a 93 del sol si. it has power steering. i dont like power steering. i know that the del sol S model, and other 5th gen civics came with a manual rack instead of power. I can get a manual rack for $100 from a "salvage" yard.
Is this swap as simple as getting rid of the pump, belt, and swap in the new rack? I think i might need the U joint (or kunckle) from the manual rack...? But i would imagine that if it came in one del sol from 93, it should work in another right? thanks guys.
-Chris
By the way, my rack is leaking slightly, so simply removing the pump or whatever isnt an option to me. Id like to get it fixed and "upgraded" at the same time.

you can just remove the lines and plug them if you drain it you should not see any leaks and it will work fine, a buddy did this. it is cheap and simple, also kinda quick like 30 45 min. when we did it. just make sure all fluid is gone and you should be fine. then remove all other components to complete the job
my buddy has been Rollin this set-up for a while and no problems yet

you get the feel of manual rack with the closer ratio of power steering rack.
I love my steering with the power steering taken out

i have heard some horror stories of plugging steering racks. I would get the manual rack. In VA it is illegal for you to plug the steering rack you have to swap the manual rack in for the power rack.

i swapped it over to the manual rack in my 92 honda.
weight savings were huge. manual rack does have more turn to get from lock to lock.
but you also don't have lines plugging it up, and it's all closed.
i got my rack for $35, and i bought brand new tie rod ends at $20 a side.
for $75 i got a primarily new rack.
works great, and is an easy swap.

Re: Power Steering Out, Manual Rack In??? (Bumnah)
so was it just that easy? buy a new rack and tie rods, and swap it in? was there any problems with getting the U joint on the steering column out/in?
Also, where did you get your rack from? junkyard? and tie rods from a parts store?
Thanks,
-Chris
