Default play in steering wheel

I just replace my outer tie rod ends and aligned the vehicle to see if this would fix the problem but it didn't. I have a 96 hatch and tonight Iput the front end up on stands and turned the wheels by hand. As I turn them I can hear a constant clicking type noise coming from the inner tie rod area. When I replaced the outer tie rods the inner ones hung down pretty low as if they were loose. They also had some play in them when I would twist them left then right, but a friend said that was okay so I just left them. Could my inner tie rods be bad, or my rack, what's clicking? Just someone help please.

Clicking while turning the wheel? How many clicks? Does it have play from left to right? If it does you need a new rack. I had this problem with my 96 civic hatch w/115xxx on the rack. I replaced it with a new rack from honda and now its right!

just constant clicks while turning my wheel by hand with car in the air, not the steering wheel just to clarify in case you didn't know that. I have around 135,xxx on my rack. How much was the rack you bought. I had one proced at Honda and it was almist $500. Did you do the install or have Honda do it. How much for install if they did do it? Thx

I had Honda do I look over on the car and they said my play is from both wheel bearings eing shot as well as both hubs are bad. Everything else is fine they say. I didn't think I could get so much play with bad bearings nd hubs. Huh. Well I'll be grabbing the parts form NAPA and will put them on this weekend hopefully eliminating my problems.
