I've seen a few cars with parking poles and I understand how they function, but how is it used once it's up? Is it for help parking or is it for other cars parking around you?

Here's a more accurate description:
The parking pole(s) are positioned on the front bumper on the passenger side (see left-hand side for RHD and right-hand side for LHD). The rear pole is clipped onto the edge of the trunk on the passenger side as well.
They are designed to allow the driver to see the outer-most corner of their vehicle to assist in parallel parking when spaces are tight.
Most people will tell you they are useless JDM bling, and for the most part, they are. But if you are short, and parking is tight, then they can be helpful.
