p28 versus p30
i have a 94 hatch with a b16. i know that the p28 ecu will operate this engine, but will it operate it correctly. i know it wont be exact, but i can get a p28 and add hondata later and save some money in the long run.
whats the verdict

I say get the p28 and run Hondata. But if you want to run stock for now then upgrade later then go with the p30, good luck trying to find it though.

the only differences are the vtec cross over, maybe a little in the fuel map, the rev limmit, and the knock sensor. you will be fiine with the p28 till hondata.

This is true, good luck finding a P30 ECU. P28's are much easier to come by and at $100-$125 it's not too bad.

I dont believe the P28's Ecu can handle a B series by itself without being chipped. Different vtec engagement, Different Fuel and Ignition maps. car would run like **** with the p28 if it ran at all.

i have driven a couple of b16 civics with a p28 ecu. i didnt notice any problems. i know that a single cam makes less power and therefore uses less fule, so the fuel maps are not going to be the same and the revlimiter is different and so forth. i guess i am asking if it will be safe, until i can get hondata. in the end once hondata is installed, it wont really matter which ecu i have.

who is to say what justifies having hondata if that is what he wants then more power to him

He asked what is better for his B16, I gave my opinion which is on a stock B16 I don't feel a full Hondata setup and the need for a dyno tune is cost effective for the power he will make over a simple chipped p28 or p30.

I would run a P30. So that you wont be rushed to get Hondata with a P28, and the car would be running with the right ecu in it until you get the Hondata.

OR like it has been said the P28 chiped for dohc.

The car would run but not like the motor should. With my gsr swap i had a obd2 p72 and could not use it on my 94 ex civic and i used my p28 for the drive to the shop to get a obd1 p72 and the wire for the knock sensor. so the car will run just not to the best of its pot....

go with the p28, its the most tuneable ecu that a lot of people use when going obd1... better to go with in the long run
