Default OVERHEATING PLEASE HELP

ok today i bought a 96 civic ex. everything was ok on the drive home until i got pulled over for a headlight out. anyways the cop asked me to get out of the car so i did. when i got out of the car it wasnt overheating but i was out for about 2 minutes and realized smoke from the engine bay, i looked at the meter and it was way over redline. how quickly does damage occur from overheating?>>??>??

Not long is it running like crap anything wrong with it now other than it overheats? Your obvioulsy going to have to replace a few gaskets and thermostat. But other than that all I can think of is an overheated head and I dont know what goes on there.

You should pull the head off and look for cracks my guess is if you just bought the car and its already overheating on you on the drive home that its been over heated before then too, probably for a lot longer then 2 minutes. Run a compression and leakdown test and replace the thermostat and make sure the radiator fan comes on.
