Odd Tach Readings
Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a 1998 Honda Civic CX hatchback to build into a nice streetcar. I picked up a Civic EX cluster with a tach for the car and after installing it the tach is all over the place.
Usally when I start the car the tach goes to to 5,000 and reads from there after letting it warm up it usally comes down to around 1,000 rpm. Also sometimes when I turn off the car the needle drops down to the right side of the tach.
When I first installed the cluster I got a check engine light for the CFK sensor and performed the CFK bypass. This got rid of the CEL but I’m still having the same issues.
I read a couple post with people that had this issue but with no solutions. Has anyone had this issue and found a solution?
The people I bought the car from performed a d series engine swap. The head is a P2A-7 with a ZC block.

Re: Odd Tach Readings
Thanks for your input. I’ll start looking into that. Is there anything in particular that I can do to find out if the problem is either the tach or ICM or the whole distributor?

Re: Odd Tach Readings
If the tach reads other than 0 with the key on engine stopped, it is almost certainly the tach head not the ICM or ECU.
I think in OBDII the tach signal comes from the ECU not the ICM.
The problem with buying another cluster is that they're all 20 years old.

Re: Odd Tach Readings
I’m looking into getting an Omni tach to replace the one in my car. Does anyone have any experience with it?
I saw a review posted by HT member SHRUGS* on the Omni tach and he seemed pretty happy with it. I have also seen on numerous occasions where people has stated that the stock tach isn’t all that accurate at high rpm.
