Odd knocking noise under car

Odd knocking noise under car
Howdy everybody,
I've recently noticed a weird noise coming from underneath the car, about midway down the undercarriage. It's roughly coming from the section in front the rear wheels. The weirdest part about it is the following:
- Only starts making noise in idle with the car in Drive or Reverse, but not Neutral or Park.
- If I'm in the driver's seat, with the car in D/R and I lean out to try and pinpoint the noise, it seems to go away the more I lean out. Almost like it's related to chassis flex or something.
I'm no mechanic but I think it's something with the exhaust system. I've check around and seen that I need to check the heatshields and the exhaust hangers, but wanted to see if there's anything else I need to check before jacking this thing up and getting dirty.
I appreciate any advice or pointers with this.

E-brake cable brackets, heat shields, gas tank hangars, pick one, any number of them can rust through and start rattling against something else.
Do you have an aftermarket exhaust or catalytic? the o2 can rattle against shift linkages easily enough as well.

No aftermarket exhaust on the car yet. But thanks for the extra places to inspect while I'm under the car. Should be able to take a look at some point today.

Alright, jacked up the car and started smacking around on the exhaust. It appears that the noise ( a hollow, rattling type sound ) is coming from the muffler itself. I don't see any heatshields to the rear of the car. The noise comes from the rear passenger side behind the rear tire, which is the muffler. None of the mounts appear to be bad, so I'm not sure what it is, but I dunno if I can fix it myself.

I did notice something odd. It appears everything the cat on back is one solid piece of exhaust, which does not appear to the OE standard for the car. Woulda made it really easy to swap the muffler if it wasn't welded on .....
