Default Noice in tranny when the A/C is on?

Every time the A/C is turned on, I get some type of clicking/knocking noise in the engine bay. When I traced the sound, it sounded like it was comming from the tranny? Any ideas?

Sounds like it to me. The transmission has nothing to do with the AC at all...

If it only occurs when the compressor initially engages, that is normal, if the noise persists, see below.

The AC pump bearing may be going bad, there are two bearings, the freewheel bearing, which is the one it rides when the ac is off, and the actual compressor bearing. If it is audible when the compressor is on, you more than likely have a bad compressor bearing.

That makes more sense. I parked the car and put it in neutral with the A/C off and the the noise did not persist. When I turned the A/C on, thats when I heard the noise. Where are the two bearings loacted exactly?

The noise is comming from the tranny side of the engine bay though.

Are you sure it's your transmission?

If you have ever seen the lines for the a/c.....it has nothing to do with the transmission.

Yea I know that, but The noise is only made when the A/C is on. It will immediatly stop when the A/C is turned off. I opened up the hood when the noise was bing made and it was a clear knocking noise on the left side of the engine bay. I am not saying its comming from the tranny itself, but that side of the engine bay.

make a homemade mechanics stethoscope.

I use my longest two 3/8th drive extensions, put together. Put one end on the transmission, the other on your ear, then put it on the compressor, keep moving it around till you can pinpoint what its really coming from.

Throwout bearings do not make that kind of noise, and if it did happen to make a sound, it would be when the clutch is pressed, not released, if you have ever taken a tranny apart you know that the release bearing sits on a rest on the input shaft.

Isolate the tranny by depressing the clutch and note any change in sound, hold it in for a good 10 secs so that the transmission stops turning completely, then let the clutch out, note the change in noise, if any. If you hear noise, odds are the bearings are worn/destroyed, and will require replacement bearings at the least.
