No Vtec getting code 17. Need Advice??
Okay finally got me some temps this thursday but due to the sucky weather here in NYC I havent really gotten to go full throttle on the car as of yet. However I did notice that although the car pulls like **** I was getting the ole rev cutoff at 6500rpms.. Checked the CEL code and saw that it read 17. Now I have a CX, but the Speed gauge wasnt working when i bought the car. I recently bought a new EX gauge cluster however again the speed gauge isnt reading anything.. Does the Civic have some special wires somewhere that i am not seeing to hook up the speed gauge. I think that is the reason why I am getting the Vehicle Speed Sensor code also which in turn keeps me in safe mode... Now I noticed that on the back on the EX civic cluster there is a blue port for another connection however I didnt see anything in the dash harness to match it up to..
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

You're speed sensor might be shot, which in turn would keep vtec from activating.
The speed sensor is on the back of the tranny, like a foot and a half below the throttle body. Try and swap that with one of your friends or something..see what happens..

I would believe that however the old gauge cluster that was in the car when it
had the civic engine wasnt working either. So I think its more than just the speed sensor... I wanted to know if the VSS had seperate wires from the other guage cluster wires that I may be missing??

The vss isn't in the cluster. It's a sensor on the back of the tranny.
If that's the problem, it's going to effect any cluster you put in there.

Sorry when I mean in the cluster I mean is there a separate wire that goes to the cluster for the VSS signal, or is it simply a part of the existing harness?? The reason why I ask is because the new cluster has an empty port for a blue 8 pin connector, however there is nothing on the harness that plugs up into it.

As far as I know, it's all in the harness. I have'nt looked at the back of a cluster in a while...but there were only three plugs last time...
The wire that's missing could have been for something else..that you don't have.
What I'd do, find a friend with your same car and just switch your cluster into his, if it works, something is up with your car, not your cluster..

Yeah I dont think its the cluster, because my friend borrowed it the other day and he said it worked fine without any problems. So I am thinking its just a harness problem that I am not seeing.. Thanks for the replies.. This civic harness has been giving me problems from the jump and I might just try to locate a nice SI harness to save me trouble...

Re: No Vtec getting code 17. Need Advice?? (KAMiN)
lol Kamin I know the fundamentals of vtec.. I just need to know the pinouts for the civic wiring harness to make sure the wires are connected to the right pins on the speed sensor.. There is a blue, yellow, and black wire. I know that both blue and yellow wires are batter powered signals and the black in ground... Just want to know what each one represents. Is the blue for the ECM signal or for the gauge??
Things like that..

Re: No Vtec getting code 17. Need Advice?? (Jason kiDD)
HEY!!! I got that same three wires left out of my cluster!! MY VTEC doesnt work either!! Car runs like **** too!! and I have a 1999 Cluster but a 2000 wiring harness and shell. Anyone have any tips of what this wire supports?
PS... I dont think its the speed sensor issue cause my Si setup was working in my old 1999 shell. but with this partial 2000 dash harness and new shell ... its has this leftover unconnected plug that causing a world of hurt.
Thanx!

Re: No Vtec getting code 17. Need Advice?? (BigDaddyRich)
Well in looking at both my civic manual and accord manual I see that the connector is a 3 plug connector with 2 signal wires and one ground. On the Accord wiring diagram its black for ground, yellow to the ECU and orange to the gauge..
On the civic its black for ground, yel-blu that looks like it connects to a powered junction connection, and yel-blu for both both the ECU pin b10 and the instrument cluster..
So according to this diagram alone I could see that if the wire wasnt getting power from the battery then the VSS signal would fail.. I just wanted to know if any other h22/hatches had any problems with their tach or is it just me with my JDM goodness that has the bad luck..
And last resort of course, it could be the sensor itself..

Opps and lastly when I looked at the actual connector on the car, it had a black, blue, yellow wire combination??

No sorry that is to the actual connector on the tranny.. The dash wires are all in the harness so there is no extra wires that are missing or anything... I just have to make sure that I am getting the proper signal to the dash and ECU..

Ahhhhh then I can safely assume that that 3 plug wire got misrouted when they swapped the harnesses. I gotta go have my boy check his VSS connection on the tranny and see if there is a plug connected to the socket.
