Night at the dragstrip, now messed up car?
My friend and I both got different cars recently and decided we wanted to run them stock and see how they do. I bought a 1997 Honda Civic EX and he bought a 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS. My engine, D16Y8, 1.6L vtec with 127hp@6600rpm and 107lb-ft torque @ 5500rpm. My car is completely stock. His engine is a 2.0L DOHC with 140hp and not sure on the torque. He has exhaust, 17" rims, and the rest stock. Even though his car is a little heavier, I figured he would win since it had more horsepower, torque, displacement, and dual cams.
So we raced.
_______Civic__________Eclipse
R/T____.872___________.430
60_____2.818__________2.668
330____7.606__________7.396
1/8____11.552_________11.218
MPH____61.61_________64.94
<Scratch that>
First problem was when the light turned green and I dropped the clutch. This was my first time at the strip and wasn't paying attention to the RPM. I'm not sure what it was but I'm guessing 5000 or more. Obviously it was too high and my front end bounched around for a moment while the tires fought to get traction. Didn't sound or feel good.
When we got to the end of the track, his power steering was out, and my exhaust was noticeably louder.
We're not sure why the power steering went out, we figured either the belt popped off or the pump went out. He previously owned Honda's, and realizes his mistake in buying a Mitsushiti.
We're not too sure on why my car is now louder. I can tell it's coming from behind me, so thankfully everything up front is fine. It's not as loud as aftermarket exhaust, but is definately louder than the stock. I thought maybe it was the 2 small cans of octane booster I put in my quarter tank of gas (didn't say how much to put in) and they had messed up the cat. The bottle clearly states that it will not mess up sensors or the cat, so what could it be?
Thanks!

FYI, even if you started faster, he still would have beaten you with his 1/8 mile time. Reaction time does not factor into yr final time.
Yr exhaust is probably louder because once you raced it, taking yr car to red line will in a way clean out yr exhaust, force out all the gunk that's been building up if the previous owner has not redlined it. It's nothing serious, probably actually a good thing. I'm willing to bet if you reraced it, you'd get a better time.

Oh I see what you mean about reaction time. Scratch that.
Anyway, the car only has 100,000 miles on it. It shouldn't have enough gunk in it to make a difference. Also, this wasn't the first time it was redlined. My Del Sol had 200,000 miles on a stock exhaust before it was wrecked, I redlined it daily and it never sounded that loud.
It's definately not a stock exhaust sound.

That's what I'm thinking. Will have a closer look tomorrow.
Might just replace with a GReddy EVO2 exhaust but I didn't plan on buying one until much later...

Re: (tissimo)
Yeah just to let you know he brought the **** and told me to try it... And it's not like they were big cans, quite small. I wouldn't and haven't ever bought any sort of additives.
Thanks for the informative comments. You are truly a great asset to these forums...

In a 95/96 eclipse the ps pump bracket was not in line so the belt pops off when the motor reaches a higher rpm. Call mitsubishi and ask for shims.

tell your buddy to return his mitsu and buy a REAL DSM. Mitusu's can be a pain in the *** but when you beat s4's and M3's in a 15 year old car theres no better look on peoples face.

Ok, thanks everyone that posted informative comments.
Yes we checked his mitsu it was the belt, friend said thanks that he didn't know there were shims.
sockvtec, we went to the Huntsville dragstrip. It's the one you go down Carter's Gin and Jeff Rd to get to.

Re: (WyteNyteGSR)
the exhaust problem could have been cause by the pressure in the stystem at the higher rpm it could have popped a whole in the muffler or separated one tube from another a little.
