so here's the story. someone thought it would be funny to drain my coolant and I didn't notice until i started driving and the temp sky rocketed. I pulled over and let it cool don and refilled the system. then when I was all good again my car was idling funny. it revs to 1 grand then cuts down to 500 RPM and continues all day long. any ideas.

For someting to be considered funny, you ALL need to be laughing !!!!
Anywhoo ... sounds like you may have heat distorted the block and or cylinfer head or inlet manifold and allowing air to ingress.
Could be expensive.
Give the bill to the joker.

did you bleed the cooling system? theres a bleeder valve where the top rar hose goes into the head, warm the car up and the open the bleeder valve until you get a steady stream off coolant coming out, close valve. Whoever drained your coolant should be hung by his thumbs.

well i hope it's not the first one. i've been diving it and the problem seems to be subsiding. if it is a bleed problem can the car slowly bleed itself. I plan in bleeding it, but if it does slowly bleed itself and the problem is slowly going away, connect the dots.

the bleeder is an option but usually not needed. if you start your car up and put the heater on full blast it will let coolant circulate through all of the passages. keep the radiator cap open for a little while to let the air come out of the system. pumping the top rad hose with your hand can help push some of the coolant around. keep doing this while the car is warming up. if the coolant level drops in the radiator keep filling it up. it should be filled right to the top. once the car is starting to warm up it is going to want to overflow so put the radiator cap on and fill the overflow up a little bit. this should get rid of the erratic idle.

I can't see that air in the cooling system is going to effect the idle at all. The two just aren't connected. Does it still run well at higher revs and have the same power it had befire it overheated ? any other symtems ? You didn't perhaps spill water in the distributor while you were filling the radiator did you ?

re-reading your first post, it may be you pulled a vac hose somewhere or a sensor plug, are you getting any error codes yet ? If you disconnect a vac hose the engine will usually idle faster and then the idle regulator valve system should try to pull it down again. Sounds liike it's doing just this. Check all your plugs and vac hoses.

Oh, but they are. Coolant runs through the Idle Air Control Valve, and having air pockets in there will definately cause some funky idle issues.

Damn where are my brains today 94, you're absolutely correct on that one, it never even crossed my mind that the simple things may be the cause of a major problem.
