New Engine Wire Harness-solid CEL Code 0
I have been searching and reading for a week and have found many things pertaining but most seem to have no resolution or end in a solution I have already tried.
My set up: 1999 civic with 98 manual ex civic harness, obd2a to obd1 jumper harness, chipped p28 ecu, b18c1 block.
I'll get the real problem out before I tell anything extra that might help us think.
I have what appears to be a code 0. The srs light flashes and MIL is on solid with or with out the service connector jumpered. The main relay does not give any of the four clicks.
Tried wire tuck, got code 4, troubleshooted, gave up, got new harness, code 0.
I put my ecu in a friends obd1 civic and it started up fine. So its not my ecu.
I took my main relay out and checked it out, looks great!
I sanded and checked g101 (ground at thermostat)
When I remove plug connector A from the jumper harness to ecu, the CEL does not come on at all. (oil and battery light do)
I suspect the ECU is not receiving power or ground.

I've been using the helms but some things just don't make since and hurt my brain.
(this drives me crazy and is semi depressing there is one action I can do to fix it right in front of my face)
Lets start from when she was running!
I'll try to cut out the bs.
I took my engine out for the hell of it and decided to do a mild tuck. I got the light wire harness relocated, from the cabin threw the passengers door area behind the fenders. I got kicked out of the garage I was using and had to throw it together quick. Everything was buttoned up and I got a code 4. Crank position sensor. She would run but die with out your foot on the gas.
I troubleshooted that for a few weeks until I thought I went crazy and decided to start over. The harness that came with the car with the original -0bd2b.
I purchased a unmolested obd2a ex harness from a trusty source and a new obd2a-obd1 jumper harness(not the cheaper ones you can get on ebay)
The distributor plug changed from 98-99. So I had depinned and repinned as needed so I could plug and play.
I did the fix for IACV. Which really confused me. I was thinking new harness I had should have been two wire instead of three.
I extended the round black plastic plug that goes on the back of the block (oil pressure I think)
When I was plugging it all in a noticed my o2 sensor plug from the harness was a female, as well as the plug from the sensor it self! I hate these weird issues that love me. I depinned the male o2 plug from my old harness and reused it on my new harness. This was the only cutting of the new harness I had to do. I would have repinned but I can't get a hold of pins locally.
I'm trying. Its hard when you live in a tiny town scarce for resources and very very few to no honda enthusiasts who will lend a brain.

Did you check fuses 13 and 44?
Is the G101 ground on the thermostat housing clean and tight?
Does the starter crank the engine with the key in ON(III)?

Ron did you notice he has a 99 civic OBD2B with a 98 harness OBD2A? That can cause a whole lot of problems I thought.

I did check fuses 13 and 44 twice.
I did sand down contacting surfaces for the g101 ground , clean and tight!
The starter does crank the engine.

I did notice the plug difference. So is what I am seeing true?
Must I switch back to an obd2b harness?

Yeah I ran in to this same issue with my 00 hatch w/ jdm b18c. Well since your car is a OBD2b, your engine harness needs to be OBD2b due to the ECU connections. OBD2a engine harnesses have 3 ECU connections and you have only 2 and one on the Dash harness. That is why you need to stick with the your factory harness.
So I'm guessing here but your dropping in a B series engine, your going to need to get a 99-00 b16a engine harness since it is a OBD2b harness with the old DIZZY connection.

Use the 99-00 EX engine harness. You can't use the 96-98. End of story. That is unless you still have the 99-00 Y7 harness and make the necessary modifications.

Yep, gotta get a different engine harness. Get the car running first then try to "tuck" the harness.

Use the 99-00 EX engine harness. You can't use the 96-98. End of story. That is unless you still have the 99-00 Y7 harness and make the necessary modifications.

I called around to find a 99-00 harness and I could only find a dx 99-00 harness. Thats not that big of a deal.
My original harness that came in the car believed to be obd2b has three plugs at the end that connects to the ecu.
One blue one green and one gray.
The new/purchased harness believed to be obd2a had four plugs.
One blue two gray and one green.
On the phone with a junk yard it sounded like I had it ready to order when I asked him to count the plugs at the ecu end and he counted 4 instead of 3.
If i understand correctly the auto version of the 99-00 harness will have 4..Correct me if I'm wrong!
He states that its from a 00 manual dx.. but it has four plugs, just as the obd2a harness I have now does. So I did not order it.
I read somewhere that the only difference in the obd2A and B harness is how the wires meet at the ecu..and that they are all color matched. Can I depin and repin as needed after some technical thinking?

I looked at many different pictures on ebay to figure out what I needed to.
Looks like with a 96-98 obd2A EWH you will have four plugs if its auto or manual.
With a 99-00 obd2B EWH 3 plugs if manual, 4 if auto.
I called the junkyard back and told the phone guy my findings so he could understand why I wasn't sure to buy it. He quickly stated that he must have an auto. Looks like their inventory is not reliable.
And he was just about to ship it to me!
A different junk yard said they had a few for 102.00. Its 110 miles away but..
I shall drive there tomorrow and get that!, +any b series hydro tranny for 55 dollars from a pull n save (fingers crossed) so I can collect a 100 dollar finders fee and pay for my gas + my f%#k up.
I think I will bring my new/obd2a harness + obd2a-obd1 jumper back to the guy and see if he might buy it back although I molested the distributor plug.
I'm starting to feel a little better.

I managed to find a 99-00 dx 5 spd harness!
It was 95.00. Not shabby, I'll pay for the piece of mind.
So far:
Iacv fix is done
female distributor connector has been depinned and repinned with the right connector for my distributor(no need for conv. harness!)
I just wanted to get everything readyish. Still need to wire vtec and fix a few wires.
I got in and turned the key to (II) and walla! The fuel pump primed and the CEL came on. I jumped the service connector and got a code 22 for vtec. AWESOME.
I've been at it for a few hours and I think i'd better save the glory for tomorrow with a fresh start.
