Default need a little help

i have a 97 civic ex. and the problem that i am having is. when i go to put the car in any gear it hard to get into gear.. and once it is in gear it feels like i am in neutral but i am not. thats just how much play there is. what could be wrong? i think it could be the linkage and/or the shifter assembly..

Sometimes the spring pin retainer clip (#1 in diagram) gets loose and can bind the linkage when you try to shift.

Most likely the shifter bushings (#14 & 16) are shot or loose. Take a look at the linkage components and see whats going on.

the bushing #14&16 r good. i didnt take notice of #1. will have to take a look at it.

just went outside and started the car went to put the car in 1st and the pedal went stright to the floor and didnt come back up so i pump it for a lil while and then it started to work normal but it was still hard to put it in gear. but i was able to drive it around the block.

If you're having pedal problems it's not going to be linkage related. Try bleeding your clutch system, check for any leaks. Could be a clutch issue as well.
