Default Need help with 96 d16y8 swap into 2000 civic ex

hi, I am new to hondas and i'm trying to get my sisters civic running again. A couple months ago the engine blew on it, so it was replaced by a friend with a d16y8 from a 96 ex. Is this a direct drop in without any modifications? The engine started up, however it did not idle right or run right. rpms move up and down. Someone tried to check codes and said that they couldnt connect with the ecm. I need some help getting her car running right and passing emissions. I need to know where to start. thanks, David

Which Intake Manifold did you use?

Is your sisters car automatic or manual? Was the donor car automatic or manual? If you're not sure about the donor car, you can tell by the location of the idle air control valve (IACV). The automatic will be on the bottom of the throttle body and the manual will be on the back of the intake manifold.

Did you keep the ECU that was in the car?

He must have, he said the car was running. The OBD2B harness wouldn't have plugged into the OBD2A dizzy.

The ecu hasnt been changed. Her car is an automatic and I checked on the intake manifold and saw the IACV on the back, so the donor car was a manual. And i guess the dizzy is good since its all hooked up and the car starts. Thanks for the help so far.

Ok. How did your friend hook up the IACV? Your sister's wiring harness should have been a 3 wire IACV plug, the IACV on the back of the manual manifold is a 2 wire. Your ECU is looking for a 3rd wire and its likely not hooked up. You need to take the intake manifold off of the old blown motor and put it on the running motor.

There's only 2 wires hooked up and the third one is hanging. I still have the throttle body from the automatic (blown motor) but i dont have the intake manifold. Can I switch out just the throttle body and hook up all 3 wires? and leave the manual intake manifold?

Well, are you good at wiring? If so, you can keep the manifold it has and just hack some wires. Unless, it's already been done, because if one wire is hanging... This intrigues me. Can you take pictures of what you're describing?

I also have another quick question. I have an OBD2 cable that hooks up to my laptop through USB. For my Audi S4 i use VAG-COM to check for codes. What software do i use to check codes for hondas?

^You either need a diagnostics tool, a trip to autozone or a paperclip, or piece of wire to get a primitive version of the code.

Ya i can hack some wires if needed and there are three wires that are cut and only 2 were connected and if i switch out just the throttle body with the old automatic one and hook up all three wires to the automatic iacv.. im thinking that should work right?

Might as well give it a trial and error shot, only a few bolts and it pops off.

Why dont you put the intake manifold from your sisters original engine into the donor?

No, you can't just switch throttle bodies. You need the automatic intake manifold.

I may be wrong, but I didn't think you could wire an auto ECU to read a 2 wire IACV.

OP said he no longer has the auto intake manifold.

i went out and bought a intake manifold from an automatic engine and i have the 3-wire plug on the iacv.. but the 3 wires coming from the car are all cut and no longer has the original plug.. i dont no which wires goes were and i have these colored wires "yellow/black" "orange" "blue/black".. does anyone have a diagram or maybe someone can check on their 2000 civic EX (automatic) and see the order that the wires are in..
