NEED axle help ASAP!!!
I looked through the posts but couldn't really find what I need to know, but I have to be at work in an hour and a half, so I don't really have time to search everything. I got a GSR tranny stamped Y80 in an EG. The problem is I bought a new passenger side axle and matched it with the one that came off the car, the shafts were same length, everything matched up. Put it in and made sure it was flush against the tranny, tightened it down and everything was going good...until I started the car. Its making a grinding/knocking sound coming from the where the tranny and axle meet. What could it be? The axle I put in was almost exactly like the one that came off. Splines, widths, lengths; all the same. Everything should be tight also, I double checked everything. Could it be the wrong axle? And if it is what axle do I need? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

It may have, I'm not sure. I do know that pushed it in as far as I could then gave a few good taps with a rubber mallet to make sure it was in there. And when you look at where it meets the tranny it flush. I'll see if it is. Thanks!

Re: NEED axle help ASAP!!!
I bought the one for a Civic from AutoZone, but the funny thing is I went to Advance first and the Civic axle he brought out was too thin at the inboard shaft but was the right length. We checked a GSR axle and that was the same width but about a half inch too short. The Civic axle at AutoZone matched perfect so I bought that one.

When I replaced my axles on my GSR swapped Civic, I used GSR axles and they work fine, but I'm sure LS axles are the same, but without the dumb ring. I was running on like 4 hours sleep and didn't think of that when I bought mine. The boots look right and everything, but I got new GSP brand axles from Advance.
Remember, the inner joint can slide in and out, and where the boot is clamped onto the shaft may make it *look* a different length.
Get under your car and give the inner portion of the joint a good tug. If it's in there like it should be, it won't come out. If it pops out, grab it with both hands and jam it in. It's a PITA, but I've done it and it's better than undoing your suspension again.
Last time I replaced axles, the little clip on the end of the shaft kept the axle from going into the dif' so I had to rotate the clip so the opening was facing downwards.

Re: NEED axle help ASAP!!!
Update....I took the axle back out, checked it and put it back in, jiggled it, pulled on it, turned it and everything seemed perfect. I started it up to see if would still grind when I let out the clutch in neutral and it didn't, so I botled everything back up, put the wheels on and started it again, still no grinding. This is where I'm getting tempted to roll the car off a cliff......I put it in reverse and the grinding came back and the car won't budge. If it's in there to where it will turn the other side when I spin it and it's all the way in why am I getting the grinding?

Also, I'm wondering how it would be the wrong axle if it is, I took the old one up to AutoZone and we matched them up, the only difference is the old one had the rubber ring in the middle and this one doesn't.

Re: NEED axle help ASAP!!!
some times when you you buy cv shafts the spline is not correct its happend to me sevral times the spline is just not machined. even tho its the correct shaft i kno there are other who had this happen to them. it happends alot when you buy the remanufactured shaft the core deposite gets beaten up and the dont reground the splines on them the just redo the bearings. assuming yours is new it wouldent hurt to check with another one.

Sounds about right....I'm taking it back tomorrow and getting another one, the auto parts store still had the one I returned for the core and we spent 20 minutes making sure EVERYTHING matched up.
