Default My Civic is idling funny.. need some suggestions/help

My wife and I both have Civics and lately my wifes Civic has been idling weird once in a while.

After it warms up a bit and driving around town when she comes to a stop sometimes the RPMs will fluctuate. Goes from 1000-2000, up and down up and down. This only happens at a stop.. out of gear.. not while driving around... and it doesnt always happen... Id say 1 out of 4-5 stops.

The Civic is a 95 Civic 2dr EX. Has approx 150,000 miles on it.

Any suggestions? I have a feeling it may be some sort of sensor going out.. and listening by ear it doesnt sound like a vacuum leak anywhere. Thanks..

sounds like the idle air control valve. check engine light may be one or may have stored a temporary dtc. also if you are low on coolant it may cause the car to fluctuate. those iac valve go bad a lot on civics.

it all depends on how it is idling. i would say that you do not have the proper fuel to air ratio. if its idling low you have too much air going in, if it is idling on high revs its running too rich

Perform a basic tune up. Rotor cap, button, plugs, wires, fuel filter, run some injector cleaner, and if it continues look into sensors like the IACV.

Thanks guys.. Ill check the coolant, never even thought of that. Ill check those other sensors too.. TPS, IAT, O2s. I personally didnt notice a CEL but I really wasnt paying attention to the dash when I drove it around the block a couple times.

I did do a regular service on it not that long ago, maybe a year. Plugs, new wires, air filter, oil change, cap/rotor, PCV... since then we've done regular oil changes but Ive never checked the coolant lately.

Thanks again.

IAC valve, it either needs to be cleaned or replaced. Try having it cleaned first, costs much less than a new one.
