Default MY CAR IS OVERHEATING!!!!

hey guyz yea well my car overheated on me 2 dayz ago....i dont know why, i had oil, i had antifreeze in the radiator everything was fine, i came to find out the radiator fan was not turning on so i thought it was gone but nope because i got the wires from the radiator and connected it directly to the battery...the fan worked perfectly so i thought it was the relay, i changed the relay i was good and now today it happened again so i connected the fan to the battery again and my car was okay. i dont know what the problem is can some help me out.

Overheating is possible through numerous things. From what you explained, I would try looking through some other places like the thermostat and water pump. Hows your head gasket?

as mentioned, the overheating could be caused by several different things...

as for your fan issue, it sounds like you have a bad thermoswitch.

start the car and take the cap off. See if coolant is moving through the radiator. If not its probably a bad thermostat. Also see if your fan kicks on. Like stated b4. It could be several things but look for the most obvious first

you saw bubbles? I dont think thats normal unless there is air in the system which would not be good. Does your fan kick on?

IMO.... you should fix this before you do anything else ....sounds like the thermostat or a short in your wiring

I just reread your post. You said the car ran fine when you had the fan hooked up to the battery? That means its overheating due to the fan not kicking on which I would think is a bad <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by turbo-2nr &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">fanswitch

if you have bubbles coming out of your radiator then you need to try and bleed the system, thencheck your water pump is still working check teh seep holes i think they are called on it and see if they are leaking if so then ur waterpump is bad. thermostats are "suppose" to stick open, but if your waterpump isnt working then ur coolant will sit in your motor and will over heat only when drove about 15-20 mins depending on hw or city streets. idk it could be alot of things there are just a few, but worse case headgasket :/ but id look at all options before doing that. unless u kno what ur doing hg's can be a hassle.

I been thinking of changing my thermoswitch lately because my D-series slightly overheats (never goes to the red though) after long periods of driving or idleing.

Where is the thermoswitch located? and where can I buy one? Thanks.

just change your thermostat ($10 and 10 minutes) and bleed your system. i would also check on the fan like everyone said and see if you have anything in your oil that would show if you HG is gone.

It is located on the thermostat housing, the coolant sensors are in the head. You can find one at NAPA or any other parts stores.

Just so others understand, the thermoswitch is located before the radiator. As the thermostat opens up, it allows cold coolant into the block to cool it down, as the system warms up because of idling, the fan switch closes, as the switch detects radiator coolant that is too hot to transfer heat, causing the fan to cycle on to cool it down.

This thermoswitch is no way related to any engine electronics, it runs inline with the radiator relay, to turn it on, and off. This is why the fan warning labels are on cars, anytime the key is in the ignition, the fan COULD come on. (Very common on some cars where the switch stays closed, leaving the fan on all the time.)
