My 98 hb dx has a bad factory paint job.
Seeing as it was purchased from a private dealer, how can I get Honda to reapint the car? I used to be a professional detailer and have encountered inumerous brand new hondas in the past with the same problem that were able to have their cars re done just because of my recommendation. But me thinks that the ever present statute of limitations has run out.
Basically Honda did'nt give the paint job enough time to cure and harden, so when they sold the car, it was exposed to the elements and has the little "x" cracks all over the hood and bumper. Thousands upon thousands of em...My cars color is the really dark blue/almost purple...I'm really not sure what the appropriate name is, so I apologize in advance to you Honda verterans. Help? Any suggestions on what I can do for the paint, short of paying for it myself? I know at one time it was a recall.

your car is purple, not deep blue
go to a profesional and get a profesional job done, might run you about 2 gs if you want a nice *** job and for it to look as good as or even better then stock
you want some shitty *** job, go to maaco or earl schieb paint for like 500 out the door, trust me you will regret that tho

I'm experiencing something similar as well and I have a 99 Cx hatch which was also painted purple pearl. I don't have 'thousands' of little x's, but my paint is just chipping/flaking off. I had went to my local dealership, with >150k miles on a 4 year old car, and they said there was nothing they could do. And this had just started happening about 1 year ago (I went to the dealer about 1/2 year ago) and it seems to be getting progressively worse.

I've never seen a Honda factory paint job with this problem . . . at our dealership they come in with the occasional scratches, dents, and acid rain spots, but I don't think I've seen what you're describing. Can you post some pics?
Also, there is no chance of Honda doing anything for you, since 1) the car is out of warranty, and 2) you are not the original owner, so who is to say that the car didn't have any body work done in the past?

if its a new car, or even hey honda has good paint so it usually doesnt crack n ****
my car i bought, was totaled and the dumas spraypainted it all red again so it would be one color, yea i had to pay 950 for a complete job with which im still not 100% happy with
it was proabbly redone somewhere for cheap, the dealership bought it cuz the paint looks good and body looks good when it was bought by them

There was a new red Mazda RX-8 inside one of our local malls and you should've seen the orange-peel paint job this thing had! I couldn't believe it. I'm sure you can get a bad paint job, but a 1998 seems a bit old to be getting warrantied for the paint.

like I said before, i used to be a professional detailer, high end detailing. So to me it's pretty obvious, and the hood/bumper was never repainted....I could have sworn I read a recall for this exact problem before but Icould not find it.

see the problem with this job and many other hondas out here in cali.....dealerships would get in brand new cars, have them painted but sell the cars before the painted cured....hardened...and molded to the surface of the car. Once these cars were exposed to the outside environment 9sun, wind, rain) ..the paint jobs had no way to possibly dry correctly with time.

my uncle has a 99 accord black, the roof and trunk had hte clear coat wearing off... it usually happens to black cars more since it absorbs the heat... anyways, he took it to honda and they paid for 25% of the cost to get it repainted... he ended up paying 2100 out of his pocket but that shiet looks brand new and they wetsanded it etc etc... they even took all the moldings off before spraying it. but either way 2k is a lot for paint job

My '95 did the same thing, the trunk and roof started doing that and then peeled, i'm pretty sure it's factory paint.

Glad someone knew the actual color, maybe people just weren't posting. But props to all the people who actually have the DAP hatchbacks, seem so rare

Good friend of mine had a dark purple(Dark amthyst pearl)sp? 99 civic hatch dx, and it had the paint chipping all over it, especially on the roof and hatch.

I had an 00 black hatch and my friend has a 99 black hatch. Both were cracking like yours. I took mine to the dealer while it was under warranty and they would not cover it claiming it was environmental damage.
