I have a 98 civic sedan lx. I am getting a metallic sound from the exhaust whenever I drive the vehicle. Any clues?

where does the sound seem to be emitting from?

You need to be more specific with your description. Is it a metallic rattling, or intermittent pinging sound? Is it violent, or subtle? Can you hear it more audibly from inside or outside the car? More when turning left, or right? Is the exhaust held together with welds, or is it made of sections, held together by springs? Lots of variables, and without personally looking at it, we still may not be able to pinpoint the source of the noise for you.

Quite possibly, you may have small rocks that have kicked up from the road over the years, and have come to rest INSIDE your mid-exhaust heat shield (assuming you have one), causing the rattling. Either that, or you have a horrible buzz-can exhaust with a low-quality shattered glass pack you've neglected to tell us about.

Also, check the clearances between the exhaust and the body of the car; maybe an exhaust hangar or pipe is just buzzing against the car.

great responses...I will examine the sound closely today and post back my observations...

that means your muffler is hitting against under body of the car
mine was hitting the lower control arm.
had to adjust it

you can go under your car and push the exhaust a good hit upwards to see if its hitting any part of the body or if the hangers are loose. My moms 350z had a really bad rattling and it turned out the bushing on her exhaust hangers was installed wrong. Play around with it.. does it only do it when the engine is cold? all the time? which section of the car (front, middle, rear)....
