Default Looking to rent or borrow ball joint separator in NJ 07719

Whats up?

I'm looking to rent or borrow a ball joint separator in NJ Monmouth County, somewhere near 07719 Belmar/Wall Twp/etc. for this weekend on Sunday.

I'm not talking about the stupid cheap "pitch fork" style ball joint remover, I have that already, I'd like to borrow a separator kit so that I do not damage the upper ball joint when I separate it. I'm doing a brake swap and I need it for up front.

Please let me know if you have one, know where I might be able to rent one, or have any help or suggestions.

Please email jay23smi@aol.com if you can help me out.

Thanks H-T!

use a hammer like the guys at the dealership do. NOT on the balljoint itself, but on the arm. PM me if you are interested and i'll give you the scoop.

I worked at a dealership for years and never seen the mechanics use a separator once.

Theres a really good trick using a ratched and lodging it between the lca and the upper part of the hub and then kicking down on the hub from top. It worked wonders for me and it only took like 1 minute.

Id find it for you but i gotta go right now

Loosen the nut, and spin it till it reaches the end of the thread, but dont take it off yet. Cuz when u start swing that hammer u dont want to damage the threads of the ball joint. Use the big hammer to hit the LCA near where the ball joint is attached to it. the vibration alone should loosen it. if its the lower ball joint have a buddy use a crow bar to wedge underneath the knuckle while u are hitting that will help if its stuck.

That's how much I paid for one at autozone.

just like they said if you hit the arm near the balljoint with a hammer a few times it should pop out no problem I also used to work at a dealer (Buick) and thats how they all did it simple easy effective and no need to buy another tool your almost never going to need. good luck

I do, I went there, they didn't have it. They only had the pitch fork style one that I already have that would damage the joints. I may check autozone again, maybe someone else working there may actually know what i'm talking about this time. I'll probably just try the hammering trick though.

Damn! $6.99. **** if I could buy one around me by tomorrow I no doubt would. None of the local stores had this. Most of the ones I saw online where kits for like $130.00. Thats why I didn't want to buy it>!

Ended up finding the tool at a store - it was pretty cheap.. worked well..

Did not damage the upper control arm hoods at all. Unfortunately the hoods on the lower ball joints were already damaged (both on the donor Integra LCAs and on my Civic LCAs). Conveniently, since I did the job at a garage of a bicycle store where I used to work, I learned that bicycle patch kit does wonders to seal minor rips on the rubber hood. Time will tell if it lasts, but it seems to be holding well.

Make sure to use the vulcanizing patches. First use acetone to prep the surface of the rubber (after the rubber is cleaned), then apply the vulcanizing glue to the area where the patch will go, let it dry and then put on the patch.> Worked well and costs pennies!
