Default Looking for advice on a D16y7

So im all set to put a megasquirt fuel management system into my d16y7 and one of my bearings slips. Ive got the motor torn down and found some blow by on the pistons, and im thinking that its a great time to build up the internals a bit. But id like a little advice on what to do. Im not building a track car, this is my daily driver. Ive got myself a set of suzuki ITB's that I was planning on putting on after I got the megasquirt working.
Im thinking that ill increase compression with new pistons and rods, while sending the head out for JG Engine's hi performance rebuild, Im also going to swap out the stock clutch for something that should be able to handle all this.
I don't need to go to high on the compression because this is mostly a learning opportunity for when I have time/space for a real project car, just want to have a bit of fun and learn on this build.
Any advice on how high I should take the compression? If their are other things I should swap out while im in there? Im thinking about putting in a stage one cam depending on how my finances go. Oh and I like to do everything myself so im not to interested in boring out the block though I do plan on honing it.
Thanks.
