knocking sound from flywheel area in gear
i have a 95 civic dx with a d16zc sohc no vtec with a 95 dx automatic tranny.
Before you go and say " do your research " know that i already looked up loose flywheel/flexplate/torque converter bolt problems. those forums are usually for different cars and under different circumstances.
when i start my car it struggles to start and i hear a grinding type of noise from the flywheel area..then when it starts everything is fine in park at idle. when i put it in gear (with no gas applied) it knocks at a consistent rate as if something is spinning and knocking. the sound is not from the valve cover or pulleys. when i hit the gas the knocking goes away quick and only comes back when the car is completely still and at idle. ive read "rod knock" forums and they say when you apply gas it will get louder. so its not that.
any ideas? any questions? HELP

So after I remove the inspection plate. The first thing I see is a round plate with a lot of holes and a few small bolts in them. That seems to look fine. But of course I can only see about 1/4 of it from the inspection area. I did notice a small spllit in whatever is dirctly behind the plate with wholes.

pull the starter at the top and look through the top as well... put the car on jack stands high enough the tires are not touching the ground and put it in gear and inspect it...

Re: knocking sound from flywheel area in gear
check your crankshaft end play. not sure on auto setups, but on a manual trans setup, crankshaft walking can cause similar issues to what you are describing.

sorry for the late reply. didnt see notification from honda tech but the crack is on the block side. recently ive pulled the starter and looked at the torque converter. some of the teeth are very very lightly showing wear. looks like its rubbing agaisnt something and looks like a smear on it. i changed the starter thinking it grinded agaisnt it..didnt help. just today something in my tranny went to SH*T and now my car grinds while accelerating.
