Default Intake theory... Could this work?

I have a short ram intake on my 95 Civic Coupe.. I didn't want to spend a whole lot more on getting cold air, so I thought of something that may direct more cold air into my filter.. It was just a thought, so I don't know if it would work for sure..
Okay, picture the circular hole in the engine bay that allows air from outside of the engine bay up to the intake filter.. What if I were to have a piece of piping, and bend it so that it leads from the hole pointing to the filter going downward, and then facing the front bumper... Would that be more restricive or would it even do anything?

ive heard of it done before where people enclose the air filter in this cold air enclosure, and also experienced hydrolocking problems

Do you mean actually covering up the intake filter? I'm not sure if I understand if thats what you mean or not lol.. I mean just a pipe pointing to the intake filter from the hole in the engine bay.

so you want a pipe to go where the lower air box used to be leading up to your short ram intake right? that would work and probably help a bit too but i would also cut out the plastic in between the ridges on the front bumper to allow for better air flow

YES!!! That is exactly what I'm trying to explain.. I'm just kinda worried that it might be restrictive, but I really don't see how.. So does anybody have any recomendations on what kind of piping I should use?

before i was boosted, i used sheetmetal to fab up an "icebox. i ran if fromthe fender, with a 90 bend to the rad support and had weather striping along the top edge so it sat as tight as possible with the hood. i did it to seperate the engine bay temps from the intake i guess.

when your engine sucks in water and the pistons lock up bc the cylinders get filled with water...this can happen with a cold air intake but honestly only if you are trying to drive through 3ft deep puddles with your idea i cant see that being a prob

i've got plans to do this myself. some commercial set-ups for trucks and what not come this way from k&n and maybe other manufacturers. the best way to think about it is to separate the filter from the underhood heat. there are a many ways to prevent hydrolock with this set up, one is by adding baffles in the airbox to deflect water and a drain in the bottom of your box. also leaving the top of the box open so that the hood acts as the lid when it closes helps by adding a secondary source of airflow.

about the restrictiveness of a set up like this, as long as the walls of the air box are far away from the filter and the piping is large enough or you have more than one source of air leading into the box the flow will not be restricted.

but it's all about supply and separation, supply enough cool air and separate from the hot air under the hood.

Just another reason I stay away from cold air... I've seen it happen to a lot of my friends :[

Thanks for the advice though man.

What you have described as your "theory" ... is just making a cold air intake. Your theory is just cheaper than buying a CAI.

So I'll only need 1 pipe leading to the front bumper if it's big enough?

Right.

For some reason alot of people (in this forum especially) seem to think a cold air intake is a very technological piece of equipment, and it's really not lol.

Exactly.. I'm just tryin' to be a good consumer and save up that money for something that won't flood my engine if I hit a puddle lol..

I'm confused as ****.

It sounds like a DIY cold air intake.

What's the actual difference aside that one you make in your garage and one you buy complete?

A pipe leading from a filter on a short ram intake to the front bumper.

whatever you can find for piping that is cheap and easy to cut or bend. also as little weight as you can get away with. i know you can but intake flex hose at autozone but it's not cheap. i've thought about grey conduit, the large radius bends would be good, but if you do this please paint it black or something... it's just better looking

Hmmm.. I'm gonna check for some kind of piping tomorrow.. But where can I find some conduit?

i would imagine hes trying to get similar numbers from a cai but without the risks of hydrolocking.

i've ghetto riged something very similar to what ur talking about. butt dyno says no more power than how it was before...

Aight bro, sounds like a CAI to me.

Good luck.

Doesn't make much sense. Water has to be pulled up from a filter takes the same strength to be pulled up from an open pipe.
