intake question
i got a b16a in my 92 hatch and was wondering if it was ok to use my old d series short ram. i also have a hybrid aem intake for that motor in my car that fits perfectly but i wanna wait til summer to put it on cuz u never kno wit this socal weather in the winter. it could be 90 degrees one minute and be pouring the next. so anyway the short ram fits and everything but its way skinnier than the hybrid and thats y i ask. would it make any performance or mpg difference? TIA.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that both intakes basically make around the same hp. Just the cold air makes better low end power and the ram makes more high end? I dont remember where I read that, but Ill try to find it again.

wrong ,the cold air sits by the front bumper suking cold air and because the intake tube is longer cold air gives high end power and better because when ur driveing like 40-100mph u got urself sum powerful air pushing towards the air filter while short ram just suks in pretty much hot air real quik cuz it's closer to the intak manifold,so in other words 4get about short rams. Try my best explaining it,hope u understood

WTF are you talking about, go do some more research. just because its a CAI wont mean it would give you 100000whp

A cold air intake benefits more from the length than the colder air. In fact, the air temperature is only 1 or 2 degrees lower with a cold air intake than with a short ram intake (and by short ram, I don't mean the retarded idea to stick a filter on the throttle body). Also, I'm not sure what you meant by "u got urself sum powerful air pushing towards the air filter", but a well designed ram air setup will only produce a ~0.7% gain at 70mph. The gain increases exponentially with vehicle speed, so it won't be effective unless you're going really really fast.
It's a simple concept. The longer the piping, the lower peak torque will be in the powerband.
Next, you will technically worsen your fuel economy with a cold air intake, but it will be by a negligible amount.

What do you mean? How will a cold air intake smooth the airflow out any more than a short ram?

not really man. wouldn't matter if it did, by the time the air gets into you system and combusts its in a completely different chamber anyway. cold air is just better for te engine at higher speeds that's all. to be honest though, the difference is so small, it doesn't really matter. and no, the intake doesn't have a positive affect on your mpg. you get more performance therefore you actually get worse mpg, but honestly, the difference is so minimal, you'll never notice.
