Intake Manifold ?'s for D16y8
im currently trying to biuld up my n/a D16y8 i was thinking of getting an Intake Manifold for my next step. I have never installed one of these before and i just have a few questions about em.
-Is this a complicated install?
-Can I still use the OEM Throttle Body?
-Is there any problem with hooking back up Sensors?
I was planning on getting the JG Edlebrock Performer X manifold by the way. Thanks in advance

Re: Intake Manifold ?'s for D16y8 (DragII)
LOL....first off, there is no JG Edelbrock Performer X....
There is a Edelbrock Performer X....
Both manifolds are still not available for sale, but were on display at the SEMA show. The manifold isn't that difficult to change out....the main difference will be that the Edelbrock manifold is design specificly for the D16Y8, so it will be a nice direct replacement....the skunk manifold has bosses on the manifold for the Y8 and the older D16 (92-95). Things look like it would be a little of a mess blocking off everything you don't use on the Skunk mani.
I wonder who will actually be first to market? and which one will run better?
Much different approach to the Edelbrock manifold than the last one, actually is more of a street use rather than race.

Re: Intake Manifold ?'s for D16y8 (Marauder)
I just Installed a Y8 Manifold on my D16y7
It was a Focus 2 Intake Manifold.
Focus 2 polished intake manifold, It is 100% polished aluminum with shorter runners. The runners inside the collectors have velocity stacks for better flow.
It was such a pain in the *** to install.
Here are before and After pics
Focus intake mani throtle body cable postining. Well that damn thing was to far to the right. Needed to be 1 inch more to the left or at least 1/4 of a inch. had to do some custom work to get it to drive home (Took a stock bracket that holds the throtle cable where it comes out of the car, bent it and used it as the center piece and tightened the nuts around it. If you look close in the pics you can see it.
If you can get your hands on one, go with a Skunk 2 Intake Manifold.

Cheap Got it for 236 shiped, with a FPR that didn't work for my car, and a 92-95 EX TB, I jump on good deals.
The Injectors are in the same place. The TB was the bigest bitch to do.

Re: Intake Manifold ?'s for D16y8 (Quad-Damge)
Wow, nice setup with the Focus manifold. Would you say there is a noticable difference in power over the old setup? Heh, I'm one of the guys still with a lame stock d16y7 IM.

So did you put that manifold on a fairly stock enigne?
That's an aweful short runner on that manifold....I would imagine you may pick up some power at the top end, but without V-tec I doubt it. But a manifold like that would really hurt mid-range power if the motor isn't built up, like stroking it or a bigger cam.
I looked at both the Skunk2 and Edelbrock manifold at the SEMA show. This time around, the Skunk manifold looks bigger with shorter runners compared to the Edelbrock manifold. I'm still waiting for a manifold shoot-out comparison!

Re: Intake Manifold ?'s for D16y8 (SlowSOHC)
the question is do you really want to get an aftremarket manifold? The Y8 manifold is considered the Type R manifold for the d series engine. Why not get you mainfold extrude honed(where they push the abrasive putty through it) to clean it up. Then you can use the money you saved for other things. Just giving you another point of view

back to the original post:
The install is straight forward, but can be time consuming. Just take your time and don't rush anything. Here are some of my tips:
* Have plenty of extensions/joints to get to the middle bolt on the bottom side of the IM. (I was able to get at it from the batter side after removing the Intake)
* Drain the coolant
* Remove the throttle body, fuel rail, injectors WITH the IM
* have some carb cleaner and a scraper to get that old gasget completely off
* don't let any junk into the head!
* while the IM is off, install some ES motor mounts and the hondata gasget
* torque the bolts down to spec BEFORE installing the injectors/fuel rail

Yeah, deffinately stuff rags or paper towels in the intake ports as soon as the manifold comes off, to prevent stuff from getting in the engine. But make sure to take them out when the manifold goes back on.....I have seen people blow rags out the exhaust forgeting to do that.....and I am sure some blow the motor as well..
But I have also seen a new motor tear itself apart because a nut was dropped down the intake port when the manifold was off.
