Hello....i installed a short shifter on my 98 civic (ex) and its too long, the bottom of it hits the exhaust pipe. whats up with that?? and i checked out a bunch of other short shifters and they seem to be the same length (from the ball down).

i dont understand it. its very strange to me. it hits like a protective thing around the exhaust. im wondering if it would be bad if i took that off. if even possible.

The heat sheild? I ripped mine off.

THATS what it is...the heat sheild. still doesnt make sense why this accurred. thanks guys

most short shifter will rub. skunk2 (which is what i currently have) rubs, dc sports (my friend had that) rubs, generic 16 dollar one (which is what i had) rubs also. honda didn't design the car to have short shifters, if they did, then civics would come with them stock. if you don't want it to rub, you can a.)bend the exhaust hanger, b.)take off the heat shield like the other guy said, c.)don't use a short shifter, or d.)think of a new way to get rid of the rubbing.

And E) on my shift linkage it had a piece of metal round stock added to the end of the linkage. I just hacked it off. No more rub.

hey, i thought about hacking that off too, what did you use to do that? and.. is the structural integrity of the shift linkage compromised after you hacked it off? if you have pictures of the linkage after you hacked it off, it would be great.

mine never rubbed on my 96.. i didnt buy a ebay one neither.. so i dunno

I went with B&M perfect fit no rubbing. Shifting is great also

Sorry no pic's

I used a hacksaw and believe me it wasn't fun. I just hacked off the last two inches of it. The only reason I can think off that it is there is if the bolt to the shifter did come loose it would hit the ground instead of the link.

i bought a 12 dollar one off of ebay before and it rubbed like crazy...i suggest you to buy a jg shifter...short throws plus it doesn't rub...shorter than the dc short shifter and the b&m...

i have read some other posts where this happened to other people. you have to adjust you exhaust hangers a little bit.

i have a Hurst short shifter and it doesnt rub but it hits the exhaust ONLY when i go into reverse

i have the b&m short shifter and it hits the exhuast from time to time....especailly if its in 5th gear or at idle...especailly at idle. did you get the bushings for the shifter? i put some in from ES and works pretty well...
