Inspections failed.... explain ?
ok well let me start off with this, i have a B16 in an EH hatch ... it was a cx and still has the 1" exhaust pipe (not to mention a hole in the pipe) so it is really restrictive. i want to know if the reason the numbers were so high is because the exhaust being 1" and not the 2.25" recommended or if the cat is blown out. i think NOx has to do with the cat but im not sure so i thought i would ask on here so i can fix this and be legal again. I know how important it is to obey the law.
so here's my numbers
25 mph RPM:2394
HC(PPM) standard=147 me=180 FAIL
CO(%) standard=0.82 me=0.73 PASS
CO2(%0) standard=unlisted me=10.6
O2(%) standard=unlisted me=5.5
NOx(ppm) standard=1072 me=2061 FAIL
Dilution(%) standard=>6 me=11.3
15 mph RPM:2103
HC(PPM) standard=152 me=199 FAIL
CO(%) standard=0.85 me=0.92 FAIL
CO2(%0) standard=unlisted me=9.8
O2(%) standard=unlisted me=6.5
NOx(ppm) standard=1186 me=2731 FAIL
Dilution(%) standard=>6 me=10.7
what do you think ? TIA

dont want to sound like a dumbass but what's apm ? Also, they took it into the back to do the inspection , i assume they used a sniffer on the tip of the muffler but i'm not sure.

roughly yes. pulls up on a roller, run the car like a dyno at the above speeds with a sniffer on the exhaust pipe.
for the OP, replace the cat, and upgrade the exhaust, that is killer small. at least IMO. check timing, etc etc. then you should be good. good luck.
and jokerluv was a typo... you have a PM (private message)

Re: Inspections failed.... explain ? (94hatchling)
so im getting a high flow cat from magnaflow, a custom 2.25" pipe all the way down and either a magnaflow high performance muffle or a flowmaster muffler (looks almost like the coffee cans but gives it a more rice noise) which muffler do you think would get better performance ? the magnaflow is lighter. Please let me know , im doing it tommorow
this will all cost about $458.88 , does that sound good ?

That's a little high, even if thats madrel bent piping. on my car here in so cal it was 325 out the door(paid cash and supplied my own muffler wich I bought for 75) and I got 2.5" piping. Also many magnaflow cats are hit and miss. There a thread on here somewhere about them, some people's seem to go bad instantly and other last for years. I currently have a dynomax and it's helped me pass twice. You may also want to check your O2 sensor and run some of the garanteed to pass stuff.

If you are going into those exhaust types, i suggest i resonator. Even though i had the normal exhaust oval-looking thing, it was still raspy, until i got a resonator, and now it sounds nice. BTW, i had the other magnaflow stuff too(what u mentioned), did not like it. My 2 cents.

Re: (mr_nemesis2003)
ok well then im going to go with the Magnaflow Cat because it gets a lifetime warranty and im getting 2.25" piping all the way down with a resonator (forgot to mention) and then the flowmaster muffler (coffee can looking) that should be sufficient to help me pass the inspections test... if not then i will have to run some seafoam and some other things

Re: (vandersmissenc)
ok so i got a Wicked Muffler straight thru (i can feel the difference from my old exhaust) and i got a magnaflow highflow cat. I got 2.25" piping all the way down. So far it sounds great and looks good... i think and my friend agrees. Although the weld job they did was really kinda shitty. but you get what you pay for $490.92 Parts and Labor cat and then cat back....are headers like DC headers going to be the same length as the stock ones ? as in would it bolt right up ?
