Default Import modification survey (for art class)

well since i just signed up today, I cant post this in general discussions, so mods i hope this is ok...or please move it for me.
hey guys, I am doing a paper on import modification and the reasons behind it for my college art class...I have to have views from both import guys (insiders) and domestic guys (outsiders). I figured that this would be a good place to get an insiders point of view, and maybe a few outsiders too. well here are the questions, if you can, please quote the question you are responding to, with your serious answers/views/opinions below it.

>why do you participate in import car modification?
>what got you started with car modifications?
>what do you think of domestic cars as opposed to imported ones in general?
>how about modifications of domestics vs. imports?
> what made you choose an import car over a domestic car?
> (insiders) how do you feel that other people view your car?
> (outsiders) how do you feel about import modification?
> how much money have you spent on your car?
> what do you get out of modifying your import car?
> (outsiders) would you modify an import car? why/why not?
> do your friends participate in import modification?
> what dont you like about import modification?
> what do you like about import modification?
> would you consider modified imports more "eye catching" over other types of cars?
Thanks
Ryan

I wanted to have a relationship that payed 1 to 1 dividends. That is to say, if I put $100 into my car, it'll perform $100 better. The people in my life at that time weren't performing up to par based on what I was putting in, so I found another outlet.

I have no bias one way or another. My Honda gets great gas mileage but is a torqueless, gutless bastard that can barely drag itself up hills. Then again, my S10 would eat its **** on a road course.

Most people view the Civic as a gay teenager's car, and they're pretty much dead-on. I would drive something nicer if I had the scratch. Not that I don't love my Civic: she's a great ride.

>why do you participate in import car modification?

Keeps me out of trouble. Could spend my money on worse things.

>what got you started with car modifications?

Buddy had a 92 Inetgra GSR that we beat the **** out of. I had to keep it running for him so we could beat the **** out of it some more.

>what do you think of domestic cars as opposed to imported ones in general?

Engine size to engine size, there is no comparison.

>how about modifications of domestics vs. imports?

I respect people who modify their cars, I just don’t always like their choice of cars.

> what made you choose an import car over a domestic car?

Goes back to my buddy’s GSR. Thing wouldn’t quit.

> (insiders) how do you feel that other people view your car?

Don’t really care what others think. I’m the only one who has to like it

> how much money have you spent on your car?

$6000 and the number keeps growing

> what do you get out of modifying your import car?

BAD: I get fines. People mess with you when you want to be left alone.
GOOD: The proud feeling that I did all the work myself with the help of friends.

> do your friends participate in import modification?

Yes

> what dont you like about import modification?

People who think they know what they are doing but don’t. People who have no idea what’s done to their car because someone else did all the work for them.

> what do you like about import modification?

It’s just fun. I get something for my car and my buddy gets something for his car and then we take a day or two and install the parts. Then we wash the rides come the weekend and head out in town.

> would you consider modified imports more "eye catching" over other types of cars?

My type of car wouldn't be eye catching, so no, but I don’t really look at the domestics too much.

>why do you participate in import car modification?
I chose my civic for the underdog status (back in the day anyway) and reliability.

>what got you started with car modifications?
Always been into tinkering with stuff (not just cars).

>what do you think of domestic cars as opposed to imported ones in general?
Domestics are cool, but I think the quality of the lower end stuff is compromised by the manufacturer. They just seem to not give a **** unless you're willing to fork over more money.

>how about modifications of domestics vs. imports?
Both are cool.

> what made you choose an import car over a domestic car?
My first car was a brand new cavalier. By the first year it was already having problems. The quality of domestics is not consistent among the trim/model levels.

> (insiders) how do you feel that other people view your car?
I build my car to be overlooked by the general population.

> (outsiders) how do you feel about import modification?

> how much money have you spent on your car?
too much. $5000+

> what do you get out of modifying your import car?
satisfies the itch to tinker

> (outsiders) would you modify an import car? why/why not?

> do your friends participate in import modification?
some

> what dont you like about import modification?
too many stereotypes associated with it. Can be expensive in comparison to many domestics.

> what do you like about import modification?
Lots of options for Hondas, usually more reliability, and more innovation involved.

> would you consider modified imports more "eye catching" over other types of cars?
It can be, but is that supposed to be a good/favorable thing?

>why do you participate in import car modification?
Keeps me occupied and gets me away from the woman for a while!! jk

>what got you started with car modifications?
People at school started modifying their cars. I started with stereo, and some ricer mods. The real tuning began when I met a friend that set me straight.

>what do you think of domestic cars as opposed to imported ones in general?
Prefer imports, I personally have had no luck with domestic cars.

>how about modifications of domestics vs. imports?
It's ok to modify both, but don't mix and match. Ex: Mustang w/ altezzas....I hate that!

> what made you choose an import car over a domestic car?
Price, dependability, and gas milage.

> (insiders) how do you feel that other people view your car?
It's nothing great, I know that....but it is getting there. I like it, that's all that counts!

> how much money have you spent on your car?
Including previous ricer mods.....around $2,000

> what do you get out of modifying your import car?
The pleasure of surprising people that think I am slow. I love wrenching on cars with my buddy. It is really relaxing (when things go right!) to put on a new part and bs for a couple of hours.

> do your friends participate in import modification?
Yeah...Pretty much everyone I talk to had a modified car of some sort...mostly hondas, and yeah, I even have a friend that drives a....(gasp)...mustang!

> what dont you like about import modification?
I hate when other import drivers give you hard looks like their car is the **** and since mine doesn't have a huge bodykit or 5" muffler hangin out the back mine sucks....usually they're the ones that get beat!

> what do you like about import modification?
The satisfaction that with every mod my car gets a little better. I'm learning a lot and I love working on hondas. I like going out in town on friday with the car shined up and a new mod under the hood. Everytime I beat someone it makes me feel great because I know that me and my buddy made that possible...no one else works on my car!

> would you consider modified imports more "eye catching" over other types of cars?
Don't really care about what they look like..."it's what's inside that matters most!"

>how about modifications of domestics vs. imports?
never modified a domestic yet, but i love modding my civic
> what made you choose an import car over a domestic car?
funds, civic was pretty cheap, pretty cheap to mod, plus a very good beginer car, ill move on to just whatever fits me at the time im lookin for a new car, may it be another import or a domestic, (hopfully a 99 prelude in about a year )
> (insiders) how do you feel that other people view your car?
i hope they like it but does it really matter? i like it, thats all that counts for me
> (outsiders) how do you feel about import modification
my guess bein that the title of thie place is HONDA tech i would doubt theres many outsiders here
> how much money have you spent on your car?
not enough yet, but at the same time to much
> what do you get out of modifying your import car?
seeing my own work, knowing that I did that, no one else, its that self satisfactoin of knowin you went and learned all about that, and then did it your damn self
> (outsiders) would you modify an import car? why/why not?
insider forum
> do your friends participate in import modification?
yes
> what dont you like about import modification?
cop attentoin, people who ruin the sceen with their fart cans and apc stickers, even tho i might be one of them w/ my altezzas im yet to replace (came w/ the car i swear)
> what do you like about import modification?

>why do you participate in import car modification?

economical, a great platform/medium for this era (in 30 years everyone is going to think souped up EG civics were the ****!)

>what got you started with car modifications?

probably a background in construction, my dad was always working on graders and drotts and crap. also i was a prodigy with Lego, which led to dirtbikes and snowmobiles and stuff... then there was the fast and the furious which i can honestly say woke me up and pushed me over the edge, i awoke and figured out that the era i grew up in will be remembered for the sport compact scene in a big way. before that i was all about the modified 4x4s.

>what do you think of domestic cars as opposed to imported ones in general?

i own a 69 chevy truck and a 68 gmc. my family is all about the domestics. i love both kinds of cars, but generally speaking i prefer domestic over toyota, mazda, mistubishi, ect... i just really like honda. my dream is to someday have a real traditional "rat" rod like a model A or a really old chopped up pickup turned roadster.

>how about modifications of domestics vs. imports?

eh... i dunno. imports you're allowed more creativity... like putting in DVD players and PS2s and all kinds of stuff... there's the show, the go, the jdm (a little of both) the old school... i could go on and on and on for pages... with domestics... well, you've got almost the same diversity. there's lowriders, lead sleds, rat rods, street rods, mini trucks, hardcore drag racers, street machines, restored vintage, there's all the different eras...

one thing about imports is there's a lot more companys building cars and less induviduals.

> what made you choose an import car over a domestic car?

probably gas. more practical in daily driving. reliable.

> (insiders) how do you feel that other people view your car?

ooh, look a stock civic.

> how much money have you spent on your car?

barely anything. but mark my words. i'm going to be so broke-*** this year... that civic is getting a lot of attention.

> what do you get out of modifying your import car?

get the monkey off of my back. keep me busy. i drive the thing everyday, of course i can't help it. it's so fun to drive, too.

> do your friends participate in import modification?

yeah, it's hilarious.

> what dont you like about import modification?

nothing. i even like the negative stuff like being looked down upon by elders.

> what do you like about import modification?

this is going to sound cheesy... but i guess the freedom. the competitiveness. the popularity of it all currently.

> would you consider modified imports more "eye catching" over other types of cars?

no.

You have helped me out so much, especially since my paper is due on wednesday I guess i should let you guys know now, that I own a 2003 mustang gt with a few mods, and the reason why i decided to use import modification as my paper topic is because ive never owned a import before, and I really just wanted to understand where you guys are coming from when you mod your cars. but no matter what i drive, or what you drive, THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!!
