Default Idle Surging, I believe its a bad tps...read on...

Ive replaced my iacv, no luck. Whenever i unplug my tps (throttle position sensor) it stops suring. It idles really high, and bogs down when i first start the car; but it doesn't surge. Can a bad tps cause surging idle? How difficult is it to replace the tps? Is a dremel tool involved in taking off the old one? Please help if you know anyting about this situation. Thanks.

Mike

yes a bad tps can cause this, to get the old one out you have to drill the rivets out, start out small and go graually bigger, once u see the rivet head turning, rverse the drill and out she comes. is your cel on?

make sure there's no vacuum leak anywhere else because tps sensors just dont go bad

The reason the problem goes away when you unplug the TPS is because this puts the ECU in default. It doesn't do it when it's cold because the ECU is also in default until the ETC reaches temperature. Any excess air that enters the motor can cause this idle surge. Vacuum leaks, IACV, FITV, EGR not seating when closed, bad PCV, throttle cable too tight, and idle screw out too far can all cause a high idle. When the idle exceeds ~1200 RPM with the engine warm and the throttle plate is closed, the ECU cuts off the fuel injectors. The idle falls below the threshhold, the injectors cut back on and the whole cycle starts over again. I had a starting boost valve(accord) that was leaking through the diapham that caused mine. Something like that can only be found with a vacuum pump/guage. Anything that has a vacuum line running to it can cause this problem if it won't hold vacuum, not just the vacuum lines and gaskets. This includes EGR diaphram, Boost valve diaphram, cruise control, MAP, Intake bypass valves, Purge solinoids and others. Air in the small coolant lines of the IACV and FITV can also cause this problem.

When my TPS was bad it threw a CEL. There was no surging. The ECU uses a default value when the sensor goes bad. Check your radiator and make sure it is full. My radiator was bone dry and the car was keeping itself warm by surging up to 3000 rpm and back down until I started moving.

So now what? It seems like there is too much crap to look for myself. Also, tps just dont go back; they come bad. I have a jdm b16a and alot of tps are bad on them due to shipping and such. Also, it surges when its warm or cold when the tps is plugged in, it doesnt matter. Where do you guys suggest i even start? I havn't tried bleeding the coolant yet. Im pretty damn sure I don't have a vaccum leak beacuse if I did when i unplugged the TPS it would still surge correct? Ive been dealing with this problem for way to long and my car runs like **** with the TPS unplugged. The idiot i bought the car from said it was the ECU causing the surge; so i took his word for it bought another p30 ecu; and it didnt make a damn diffrence. Now what; im about to just pay a shop to fix it beacuse im tired of dealing with it.

Do you have a FITV?

The car will not surge when you put it in default by unplugging the TPS. The idle should just be higher than usual. The TPS is not the problem.

Usually idle surge whether warm or cold is caused by a FITV. Inside there is a thimble surrounded by a donut. The donut gets loose and can be screwed back down so that it seals properly with the thimble.

exactly the FITV is under the throttle body thats what my problem was!

If the seat is loose it lets in too much air in varying amounts. So you get a surging condition when it's cold and in default and when it's warm it's a huge air leak that raises the idle above the injector cutoff threshold and you get idle surge while warm.

Intresting, so i guess checking my fitv would be the next best step eh? Ill have to try that? I also havnt bleeded my coolant after i tried taking my iacv off and cleaning it. Could air have gotten in the hoses and **** causing surging?
