That's the VTEC oil pressure switch.

I'm assuming this is a D16Z6 or OBD-1 D15B engine? You never mentioned what car or engine it is.

Check salvage yards. You can find the same VTEC oil pressure switch on any '92-00 Civic w/VTEC (not VTEC-E), any Prelude w/VTEC, any Integra w/VTEC, and any J-series V6 (the VTEC spool valve on the V6 is located on the lower rear passenger side of the engine next to the oil filter).

A new one from Honda costs about $66 (part no. 37250-PR3-003).

i have heard of a couple ways to bipass these and am looking in my local area for a v-tec controller. another way i heard is another (maybe the same) product that wires into the ecu and to the (rpm sensor?) has a dial for the v-tec to kick in. anyone have the name of this?

its a VAFC and don't use it. it only makes the vtec lobe engage. it does not change the fuel map in the ecu for vtec.

Whether you can run it or not depends on how it is broken. If it's spewing oil with the engine running, then don't run it. If it's not leaking any oil, then you can drive the car but the VTEC won't work and it will probably throw a CEL.

I got a spare vtec pressure switch/ solenoid. $25 shipped anywhere in the lower 48 states. $35 to eastern canada, $50 to western canada.

I broke that same switch in my GSR swap. You can run without it. VTEC will engage because that sensor is there to tell the system when NOT to engage. It senses low oil pressure and prevents VTEC from engaging. A failsafe if you will. I ran a couple of days without it until a new one came in.

You don't need the vtec pressure switch. Alot of OBD2 engines don't even have it.

Fix: Cut the pressure switch wire (the one between the ecu and the switch -- not ground) and splice it into the vtec +12v line. That'll satisfy the conditions the ecu is looking for and as long as it doesn't leak you'll be good to go.
