Vtec experts please help with d16z6 vtec problems. I have read the troubleshooting faq.
So I have a d16z6 that I swapped into my crx. The wiring for the VTEC is correct.
Last night I checked the wiring, I pulled off the solenoid and checked the screens and that the plunger moved freely, no problems. I also jumped the solenoid to the battery and it clicks just fine. I still do not have vtec engaging.
I have a few hunches as to what it might be, but I was wondering if any experts could help me out.
I know that the vehicle speed sensor is properly hooked up to the speedo, but I don't know how to check if it is working properly. I suspect that it is pretty reliable and that is no the problem.
I checked th oil sensor and it seems to be ok (per the service manual). I tried hooking my multimiter to it while it was runnign to see if it was registering pressure, but I don;t know what it is supposed to read, does anyone know?
My biggest suspicion is that it is a missing oil jet in the head! I had the head cleaned and a valve job done at the machine shop. I am thinking that they took the oil jet out and forgot to put it back. Would not having the oil jet in the head cause vtec to not work? Also, where can I get an oil jet from. can I use the same one from the block of another d-series motor I have laying around?
Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

how do you know that vtec is not engaging? stock d series vtec crossover is almost undetectable to the driver even when functioning 100%.

I guess I don't know for sure. I was under teh impression that I would be able to tell when the vtec kicks in. It seems pretty flat and slow acceleration at high rpms. what is the vtec crossover rpm on the d16z6?

well you wont be able to really hear it kick in but what you can do is grab a long wire and with one end splice into the wire that goes to the vtec solenoid and the other end take it inside and hook it up to a test light. if it comes on well you got vtec if it doesnt ill send you schematics on the wiring and where to check on the computer outs. What computer are you using also? obd1 or obd0?

I am using obd1 p28 ecu. I have the schematics and the pinouts for the ecu. I will try putting a test light on it and see what I get. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Also, does anyone know if the vtec will work without an oil jet in the head?

crossover on a p28 is 4800, 9 times out of 10 you cant tell when it crosses over. sometimes if you get the right kind of short ram on it, you can tell a difference in the air sucking sound through the filter...barely, but it is there, and there is no difference in the way the actual engine sounds or feeling of power.

lol, ok, I didn't realize the d16 vtec was so anemic! I am going to try putting a test light on it tonight.

Just because you can't hear it or "feel it" doesn't mean that VTEC is not working. On my stock y8 I can't hear, or "feel" anything doesn't mean my VTEC doesn't work. My car still slow even when in VTEC, VTEC isn't going to make your car feel like it just hit 25psi of boost.

I'm not sure if the missing oil jet would keep it from switching over its possible because it needs the jet to keep the oil pressure up in the head. Yea i could never feel the cam switch when i was running my z6 in my ex, but i could feel/hear (with the windows down) if i was in 1st gear and at part throttle or about 50% or less and let it rev up slow from a stop to 4300 through 5000 rpm. You will feel a little tug and hear the engine note change and thats about it but I've only felt it at part throttle the test light would really help finding the cross over point.

Well put. The car is just slow, And the changeover would be noticeable with a short ram.

if you are relocating the battery, punch a hole through to the fender and put the filter in there, i don't have any pics, but ultimately you will end up with a straight, short, intake pipe that gets cold air just like a normal cai, with less danger of water. The pipe itself stays cooler because it never comes close to the engine once it leaves the TB

this is a crx with a d16 z6, so relocating hte battery will give me room to run a typical short ram
