I have owned a 2000 si and I can tell you with 100% certainty that it twists off counter clockwise.

it should twist right off. if you have the SI then you need to pull the shift boot down and off the shifter then loosen it

For a non-Si model, you twist it counterclockwise. Period. It's only screwed on, and the boot is not attached to the ****.

For an Si model, you grab the boot firmly just under the chrome trim ring, and pull straight down to separate the boot from the ****. Then you twist off the **** counterclockwise.

theres a small clip that attaches to the bottom of the shift ****....push it downward removing it from the ****. now the boot and **** are seperated.....twist the **** off
