on my b16a block, do i need to remove the timing belt cover to find the "pointer on engine block"? or is the pointer the diagonal line on the timing belt cover? thanks for your help!

Nope, don't have to remove any timing belt covers. Just hook up the timing gun. Point it at the crank pulley and make adjustments by moving the distributor. PM me if you want more detailed info.
