im going to be doing a mini me on my friends 94 lx. he just picked up a y8 head and trans for the swap. so how does this head look?

also just to make sure are we gonna need a z6 timing belt or a y8 one? and another question this head came with an aem cam gear allready on it so wich mark on the gear is tdc? is this right?

if so shouldnt the valves on number one be both closed? heres what number one looks like with the cam gear there.

oh yea the trans is stamped p4a b000 this is a vtec trans right? i know the z6 trans were stamped s20 b000. thanks

Although more pics would be helpful, from what I can see the head looks great - very very clean. How many miles does it have on it?

Unfortunately I don't know how AEM cam gear markings are supposed to work, but from what I remember is that AEM doesn't make a cam gear specific to the Y8 head - they just use the same part for all 88-00 SOHC heads, which is stupid. Keep in mind that the Y8 cam gear is different than all the rest, so if you follow the TDC markings for the AEM cam gear, it's not going to be accurate on the Y8 camshaft, however if you have a Z6 head or A6 head, it would be correct. Even so, your cam gear looks like it's 180 degrees off.. Try lining up that other mark that's opposite to the one you have aligned, and I'm sure you'll get much closer to #1 @ TDC.

If nobody else can help you with the markings, either try and get a hold of AEM customer service, or just use an OEM Y8 cam gear for reference. They only cost like 20 bucks from Honda (check out majestic's website).

Either way, it looks like you've got a good deal on the head! Also, the only way to be %100 sure about the valves is to take it to a machine shop. They'll be able to pressure test it for proper valve seal.

I can't help you with the tranny though...

he was told 40,000 miles on it. it looks way cleaner then my z6 head witch is golden colored. ill try and get more pics on later. thanks mrtodd i would of rather ran the stock cam gear but my friend wants to use this one and the guy threw it in for free so yea. should all the valves be closed on number one when at tdc? thanks

Yes, number one valves should be fully closed @ TDC when referring to the cam gear.

i have the same cam gear and head...u have it 180 off..the line with the 0 is suppose to be up...also looks like the cam gear is set to advance a few ticks

A) That head is in great shape, looks like whoever had it previously didnt go 20,000 miles between oil changes.
B) You'll need a y8 timing belt
C) The mark on the cam gear with the 0 through it is TDC, and the 2 marks 90 degrees from it should be lined up with the top edge of the head if looking at the cam gear head on.

How far is it advanced? Looks like 3-4 degrees. Its possible its a z6 cam gear, and by setting it like that, they essentially set it to "0". The only way you'll be able to tell which cam gear it is is to pull the bolt out of it and see if the keyway lines up with TDC, or is slightly turned to the left, to about 4-5 degrees advanced.

yea i havent even messed with it i was just thinking it was set at tdc when whoever took it apart.

The head looks good. The y8 head I bought from another h-t member looked just like it and two of the valves were sticking out. Just make sure the surface of the head is flat and not warped.

This guy speaks the truth. Look on the top of your picture youll see another line, and then you see that notch where the line is now, thats were the other line is suppose to hit. Also set the cam gear to 0 then go to a dyno and have them adjust it.

yea i know i just did that now all the valves are closed on number one.
