Re: How do I tension the timing belt??? (code415)
once the belt is on, tighten the tensioner... this should apply tension to the firewall side of the belt and the side closest to the front of the car should be loose... now turn the crank pulley counterclockwise until there is no slack on the side nearest the front of the car... usually a few teeth on the cam gear... now all the slack should be on the firewall side of the belt and the side nearest the front of the car should have tension... now loosen the tensioner and then retighten it... now it should be good to go... i always turn the motor over a few times and check the tension on both sides to make sure it isnt too tight or too loose and also check to make sure the timing marks are aligned properly... single cams can be a biotch sometimes... i usually advance the cam gear a tooth or so when putting the belt on that way when you take the slack out of the belt they will be lined up properly
