timing it, and changing the timing belt are 2 different things.
if your saying you pulled the head off. without setting to tdc.and didnt zip tie the timing belt in place to keep the motor in time, sorry to say your screwed.
you basically have to set the motor at tdc...then on the crank pulley its marked UP. line those up and hope for the best. That and invest in a timing light. sears has em cheap
its going to be a real headache if you just haphazardly yanked the head off the motor without setting the belt prior. I guess you already know that though

You really should always set the motor at TDC before the belt comes off.
set the cam to TDC. The UP mark on the gear point UP.
With the lower timing cover on, line the white "line" up with the mark on the cover. The crank is now at TDC...
put it back togther and set the tention, and check to make sure you didn't get it 1 tooth off. it's VERY simple to get these engines 1 tooth off.
