Default Honda Civic LX Axle Problem

I recently got a 1996 Honda Civic LX (D16Y7) for next to nothing from a friend. The input shaft bearing was gone in the transmission. I am over in the UK but is a US spec car so instead of just doing the input shaft bearing i got another transmission. The transmission came off of a 1.6L VTEC engine, and everything matched up perfectly untill i got to putting the axles back in. They will not go in, it is almost like the male end of the axle where it goes into the trans is too long. And the other side (longer axle) will go all the way end but it will just spin its self back out. So i guess what I am wondering is were the axles different for a D16 VTEC trans? Any input would be much appreciated.. lol I just want to get this car rollling
