high pitched squealing noise from engine bay (worse when cold)
I've been hearing a high pitched squealing noise lately. I thought that it was the tranny at first because the noise went away if I pressed in the clutch. However it has been really cold here lately (like 15 deg and snow). I started the car while I was getting the snow/ice off and heard an incredibly loud squealing noise. At this time the car was in neutral. It eventually went away as the car warmed up. I'm at 86k miles and still on the original belts.
Its a little cold out right now, but I plan to inspect the belts ASAP. Anyone have any suggestions on what else to look for? Is this normal considering the mileage and weather? Is this a sign that something is about to go soon?

Yeah, since I'm rolling up on 90k, I plan on putting on a new timing belt soon and might as well replace all other belts at the same time. I might just try the belt dressin for now though.

Yeap I'm 90% sure its the Belts
When my car reached its 88K it did the same thing so i changed them
Try dressing first then if the squeel goes away you know exactly what to do

tighten up the alternator just use a big screw driver as a lever and then tighten the 12mm nut on top to keep it where its at if that dosnt do it replace the belts they probally need it anyways or if you want try spraying some belt oil/grease on the belts and pullys to see if thats even the problem i think its called belt squeal stop or somthing im not sure what its called but it might be somthing as simple as 2 bucks for a can of belt spray just to lube the belts because the cold weather is dray and so the belts get dry and make noise

ok dude, obviosly it's one of your belts. I had the same exact problem with my old prelude. However, it has been a long time since then and I can't remember which one it is. I pretty sure that it was the fan belt, but it be your alternator belt. Best thing to do is open the hood and start the car. Then listen carefully to find which belt the noise is coming from. Once you have figured that out, stop the care and check the tension on the belt. Have a Chiltons or Haynes book handy to check the specs. I hope this helps.....

My civic has a squeaking comming from the AC idler pulley, its bearings are not perfect which causes them to squeak. Im going ot try to lube it up before I replace the pulley, its like a $30 part. But would be a horses *** to replace.
