help please! asap valve bolt snapped
i was changing my valve cover gasket and after i put on the new gasket. i started putting the bolts back and i was going to tighten it with my really big torque wrench that i just bought at orielly, the manual says 86 lbs and i just keep turning it waiting for it to lock then all of a sudden it snapped. i removed the valve cover again and it seems like theres no way of removing the remainding screw from the one that snapped, at least thats what i think. any tips would be appreciated.
i then jsut decided to put the cover back and hand tighten the rest and jb welded the bolt to the cover? is this safe? is there an alternative to fixing it? thanks

thats cuz its not 86lbs. its more like 17 inch lbs. look at the bolt. its a 10mm bolt. no way would it be 86 ft lbs. heat bolts are probably 86 ft lbs.

Wait, you tried to torque the valve cover to 86 pound feet!?!?!!? Are you serious? My head studs are torqued to 85. Valve cover bolts are hand tight and thats it.
In order to fix that and not have oil shoot out, you have to take the valve cover off and with a 10mm open end, you remove the stud that snapped and replace it with a new one. and re install the valve cover HAND TIGHTENED!

Re: help please! asap valve bolt snapped
Same thing happened to me. One snapped while tightening it and another one snapped while removing the valve cover again to try and drill it out. In the end, I had to take it to a shop and it cost $200 to have it drilled out :/

this happend to my customers car when i had a blonde moment.
i drilled a small hole into the bolt, then bought on of those small screwlike things from autozone, screwed it into the bolts drilled hole, and removed it. $5 for screw, $6 for the new bolt with gasket= zero headache and empty pockets from a $200 rapefest.

i already removed the cover, its in there deep that i cant put a vice grip on it. racer, do you know what part number or what type of screw did you use? i might just rent a dremel at autozone. my drill is pretty huge,it might do more damage than good. thanks for the advices guys...

not ft/lbs, 86 inch pounds! good lord, you don't even torque head bolts that tight.
as far as how to fix this, it's been covered fairly well. after drilling a small hole, use a bolt extractor. like this for example

Re: help please! asap valve bolt snapped
It just bolts into the head. I did this on new year's eve day right before going out. I ran to the bone yard and took one from there. They gave it to me. It was simple. SIMPLE. I just used a wrench. I think it's 10 mm. $200? Sounds nuts. I have heard of other cars where drilling it out is necessary, but it certainly IS NOT on a 15B7.

Re: help please! asap valve bolt snapped
Well in my situation the problem was that the ez-out drill bits weren't strong enough even after drilling a pilot hole to grab the screws because they're made out of steel if I'm not mistaken.

oh man, i remember when this happened in my y8 twice. I just went to a shop, dude charged me $20 to get the stripped bold out and put a new one in. I tried using a bolt extractor but to no avail.
