so i just finished putting my motor in my car. it is a used motor and ran fine before now. Obd2 GSR motor with obd2 wiring harness in a 1995 DX hatch. running an OBD1 p72 ECU.

the only wiring ive had to do - i wired up VTEC - pretty sure i did this right.
i also had to fix a couple plugs on the wiring harness because they had broken off. both of these applications were done clean and right with solder and shrink wrap.

i started the car up (no exhaust) and it idles at about 950 (1400 if i use my p30 ecu). Everything sounds fine, nothing is leaking, so i decide to drive around the block. i wasnt getting on it right away cause i had to get down to a street where i could punch it. When i got to the end of the street i punched it. it sounds like vtec is engauging at like 3300 rpms. i say VTEC because the tone seems to change and it starts to pull back a little harder. staying on the throttle, when i hit 4700 it redlines - you know pops and **** like when you hit rev limiter. WTF?!?

I checked my codes and im getting a 23 and a 41. ANYONE HAVE IDEAS?!?

Is my car running in safe mode?

On another note - my car says its overheating, but its not my gauge on the dash is fucked up - i think. Could this cause this?!?

bump, i have this same problem only its with a d16z6.

code 23 will be your knock sensor... 41 is o2 sensor and some people say knock sensor CEL will disable the vtec from poping.. and code 41 is easy..simply replaced first o2 sensor and about the rev limit redline..u ever try to replace with another ecu besides p30 ? if u can try on a chipped p28 ecu

ran a p72 and a p30, both did the same!

i have a p28 with hondata but i doubt thats gonna make anything better.....

i thought i had the knock sensor wired up ill look again

knock sensor is wired in the engine harness, but not to the ecu. i doubt not having the knock sensor would cause it to redline at 4700!

anyone else have an idea???

you mean an auto tranny ecu? ive tried both a p72 and a p30 i know the p30 is manual for sure, the p72 no idea.

no way the ecu is the problem.

id say its the dizzy mine did the same thing one time... i replaced it and everyhitng i ended up takin it to a shop and they had to fix the wiring and a new cap and rotor i think

ok tried my friends dizzy! no progess. fixed the codes tho, so im not throwing any!

car still redlines at 5500? anyone know why?

checked grounds, tried a different tach, and changed a few other things, no luck.

changing the wiring harness now, should be done soon, anyone have anymore ideas?

Im thinkin that it's ur o2 sensor...... that happened to my em2, but a possibility that ur car is on limp mode..... does it not go past 4k rpm????

car hits the rev limiter at about 6k! on both ecus (p30 and p72).

i fixed all the codes, no more o2 problems or knock sensor!

Code 23 knock sensor WILL Not cause it to hit fuel cut off early like that..

i know it wont, but i fixed that code anyway.

Any ideas of what could be causing this bullshit?

friend had that problem with an h22 and it turned out to be his fuel pump...
if that helps.
