Default Help!

hello everyone i just purchased a 1996 Honda civic hatch and while driving i have discovered a rattling noise mostly accelerating and going from second to third gear but when the car is traveling at a constant speed there is no noise. i would describe the noise like a rattling coffe can kind of. i was thinking that it is the cat? becaue the guy i purchased the car from just replaced the exhaust and its still loud. is this a possibility?

thank you all!!

does the whole car shake or is it just a noise
could be exhaust hitting something like your shift linkage
or if it shakes the car it could be axles or mounts

Could be a heat shield.

:thumbup"

It seems to be pretty common on these cars. I remember Christmas Eve a few years back pulling over and yanking my heat shield off the car.

hey everyone i have another question. i took off the shield and its still making the sound. i was wondering if it could be the cat? because it is very loud for having a stock exhaust and just replacing the muffler. so could the cat be making it louder?

thanks for the help its appreciated!

Did you get all of the shield? It should be a two piece. Remembering from my EX coupe, it went up and around the O2 sensor, so we used tin snips on that part.

Just get underneath the car and rattle stuff around, or just put both the front wheels up with jackstands and start the thing (don't do anything stupid, like putting it in gear :p), you can't miss it then...
