got screwed on a lsvtec deal
i just purchased a eg hatch with a "fully built" ls vtec. i recently started cleaning up the wiring nightmare and noticed a bunch of half *** work. and thats not the half of it. when i got the car it was at night.. i know a no no. but the guy didnt bother to tell me that there was no air cleaner on the car. i saw the cold air piping. didnt bother to look for a filter. figured the guy would have told me. n e ways, i drove the car home in the rain. bad news. the car burns oil now. due to sand/salt..etc. i have decided. its time to rip this thing apart and see how bad i got screwed.
how do i check what oil pump i have??
what else to look for when i have this thing apart..
it has a chipped p28. when i had the cams out last night didnt notice any new parts in the head. kinda thinkin there wasnt any work done to it. springs looks stock. what should i be running for rpms?? rev limit on the car right now is unknown. goes beyond 9k. (only did it once)... kinda sucks getting a car not knowing what or what hasnt been done to it.

you should have DEFNITELY asked for motor specs when you bought it. try contacting the previous owner and see what he tells you

its not his fault you got screwed, its yours. its the buyers responsibility to check over the car, not his.
Sorry for your bad luck.

well youre in luck with the oil pump. i work for honda in the parts depot and all the b series oil pumps are the same. the oil pump for a type r is the same as one in a crv, they even have the same part numbers now. so unless the previouls owner took it upon himself to do one work on the pump itself your safe.

Well whatblock are you working with?
B18a and obd1 b18b didnt have "vtec" oil pumps.
It was until obd2 that ALL (vtec and non) b series had the "vtec" pump.
You can also check for 22T cast on the pump.
22T = vtec oil pump
The water pump should also have a number cast into it (i have to look for it right now)
You can also check by the number of teeth on the gear.
Believe it or not the vtec water pump has LESS teeth than the LS/CRV pumps.

All b series water pumps from 1998 (if i remember right) to 2001 have the same oil pump, that's what i laugh when people talk about their special Type R oil pump upgrade.

Re: got screwed on a lsvtec deal
ill be checking the pump out tonight. i have most of it apart now. did a compression test this mornin and not good. put a camera into the cyl. could see significant scoring on the walls. safe bet is to just complete tear down and rebuild. i will say, this honda is alot easier to work on then my nissans.

Re: got screwed on a lsvtec deal
The older non vtec pumps have more teeth. The gsr and what nots have less teeth. The less teeth it has the more times it rotates per engine rpm. So less teeth equal more oil pressure per engine rpm
