Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
I prefer the GM FM over Honda MTF by a mile on the older 5 speeds.
I would suggest doing both quarts of GM FM and half a tube of Molyslip Manual Transmission Supplement.
It will shift like butter once yer done. Night and day difference.

Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
Ideally, Torco MTF is the way to go, of which I found it's now available on Amazon.ca for a reasonable price so I might be switching to that soon. But Torco is allegedly only good for 7000-8000 miles.
I run GM Sync FM like Honda MTF which is 30,000 mile intervals.
But yeah in the 90's transmissions, I did find GM Synchromesh Friction Modified with the Molyslip was extremely good in all weather conditions. While Pennzoil Synchromesh sucked horribly.

Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
While we're on the subject, does anyone have any recommendations specifically for carbon lined synchros? I am using Honda MTF but if something else is better I'd love to know.

Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
They say they have it specially formulated for the carbon synchros.
I'm currently running the GM Sync FM with Molyslip in my K manual with carbon synchros and it's decent so far. Seems less crunchy than when I had Honda MTF. I do not know the longevity of it all with the GM and Moly though, seems better but who's to say. My 2nd gear synchro was already swapped on a TSB before I got the car so I am told. So if my 2nd goes out early, I'll know why.
**CAUTION** A word of warning, do not use Molyslip MTS if you have ANY kind of wet clutch system going on. For example, plate style (non helical gear) LSD's fail with molybdenum disulfide. I researched and learned the Honda LSD in the K20Z3 Si is helical gear so isn't affected by friction reduction.

I'm no expert but I do think the B transmissions of that era was built with the same materials as the D's. So Yeah I would run it in it too with the brass synchro's etc.

Thanks TomCat!
I am going to go to the O'Reilly and get me some of the GM. You can get it there, correct?

No. You will need to get it either from a GM dealership (call first for stock) or from Amazon. When I last purchased Amazon is WAY cheaper (their price changes daily). Local Chevy dealer wanted about $20/qt. It exists under 2 part numbers, so have both handy when calling/searching.
10-4014 or 88900399.

Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
Current blend super-thin Honda MTF was notably BAD, like I felt bad for the trans BAD. To be 100% transparent I don't like it in the older trans' anyway and usually run 10w30 conventional dinosaur sauce in those too. Swapped to Torco MTF and it's notably nice. I'm in for the extra maintenance, I just get it every other oil change.

Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
Torco MTF is on $.50 more/bottle at Amazon, or even better Syncrotech is $15/ltr with free shipping, and they have a 10% H-T discount:
Transmission Fluid
im likely switching to the Syncrotech next change cycle

I've had good luck with this for 2 years now. I agree with everyone else that current Honda MTF doesn't feel good.

AC Delco is GM (General Motors). If you are looking for GM Synchromesh Friction Modified it's labelled as AC Delco Sychromesh Friction Modified.

Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
Regular, extra virgin, double pressed or light?
I think it may depend on location. Pennzoil was okay during summer but once it got cold in winter, it wasn't very nice until the trans warmed up.
Even current Honda MTF was a little less workable in the cold of winter. GM Synchro FM hasn't had that issue and I highly doubt Torco will.
My trans was pleasantly happy except with crappy fluid during winter.
I even tried 10w30 conventional dino oil but it still wasn't as good as GM FM or Torco.

Re: GM Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
Sure. I had actually just noticed it on the front page of the forum right after I read through this thread. Note they have a 2-service D/K 4 liter kit and a B/H 5 liter kit. It's basically 5th liter free at that point.
