Default Be gentle I'm a newbie to hondas, wanted to get some info.

Hey everyone. I recently accuired a 1996 Honda Civic DX hatchback with 53k miles, the kind with no tach :-(. This is my first Honda and I just wanted to ask a few questions, I've been searching but I'm having a hard time finding some info:

1. What is the engine code for this motor? it is the 1.6 liter.
2. Is this car called the EK9?
3. What should I look out for with this car in terms of maintenece or anything?
4. Are there any free mods or some simple mods I can do to the little motor?
5. Should I even bother to mod this car, or is it hopless?

I have alot more questions like what motor do people swap into these cars, and what is the best suspension and exhaust, but I'll save all that for later, once I figure out the basics. If anyone could point me to some good links for FAQ's, part distributors, or anything else that could help a newbie I would greatly appreciate it.

You have a 1.6L D16Y7 Non-Vtec motor. It does have hope if you change a few things like put the EX (d16y8) intake manifold on instead. (it's bigger)You have a very reliable engine and with time and some money, you can make a beast out of it.

1. What is the engine code for this motor? it is the 1.6 liter. d16y7.

2. Is this car called the EK9? In Japan the CTR is a EK9.

3. What should I look out for with this car in terms of maintenece or anything? Maintain your oil levels, low oil or low oil pressure will result in a spun bearing which isnt to uncommon for SOHC's.

4. Are there any free mods or some simple mods I can do to the little motor? Take off your resonator box under the intake, will make your car sound neat-O!

5. Should I even bother to mod this car, or is it hopless? It is not hopeless, SOHC and DOHC honda motors are just as capable of the rest.

Most importanly before asking a basic question, SEARCH. Its probably been covered 1000 times.

it is not hopeless, get an EX tach, and either do a EX head swap (mini-me) or swap the whole engine

Sorry for my post if it was stupid or redundant, thank you for your help. Any links to some places that could get me started modding or some faq's?

More air + more fuel + larger stroke + and bigger bore = more power.

So, therefore any engine can be modified. In your case as suggested upgrade the head to a vtec head and increase the air flow. You will see some major inprovements. Upto 25whp.

When you search:
https://honda-tech.com/zerosearch

Search for FAQ, tons of them. Or at the top of the forum.

Not at all, you had a very legit question and that is why this forum is here! Keep the questions coming, and I hope to help answer them. I ask questions all the time, that is how you learn. They were just giving you a pointer on how to search. Such as, type SOHC build-up in the search, you can read through the articles the member here have written and learn a lot!

6th Gen. Civic DX/CX Hatchbacks: EJ6 not EK9. EK9 is a CTR in Japan.

get a transmission from an ex (d16y8). that would be the first thing i would do. the gears are way shorter - you'll go much faster. then get the intake manifold from an ex - it flows much better. then turbo that thing, and you'll be set. who needs vtec when you have boost?
