Fuel Pump? Whining! 99 EK
Ever since i bought my car about 2 years ago, it has been making this weird whining noise at random times. Sometimes its right after i turn off the car, other times its hours after the car has been touched. Sometimes it even did it when the car had been sitting for days!!
The noise is coming from under the car, around the fuel tank area. I know its hard to visualize that is why after a long time trying, i finally got it on video! Check it out:

Any Ideas???

Sounds more like a kazoo sound than a whining noise. I have never heard anything like it. Based on the location, my guess would be a problem with the EVAP system.

There was thread about this same thing just a few days ago. My 99 EM1 has been doing it ever since I got it back in 2002. It hasn't harmed anything, just annoying as hell. I'm starting to believe that its pressure in the brake lines because its not always in the rear, it'll change corners every now and then and sounds as if its right behind the wheels. I had my car off the road for about 3 months over the summer, even after not being started for so long, itd still make the noise. If its not the brake lines then I'm also in for what the hell it is.

Evap System Ey???
What evap system related part is back there that could possibly make that noise???
Yeah i saw that other thread, but it didn't answer much. I dont think its the brakes, because my noise is only in that spot, it never changes.

yeah after posting that, mine started doing it... literally while it was posting haha. i tried pumping the brake and it didn't fluctuate the noise at all so its definitely not the brakes lol. and again, im in big time to figure out what this is lmao. maybe its just the sound bouncing off the bottom of the car and seeming to come from different locations. blah!

hell, im just glad someone was actually able to capture it on audio lol. and it only took 15 seconds... good job man! mucho kudos!
So where exactly is the evap canister for the fuel tank ron? this is a common problem... and from you guys hearing that video, just imagine hearing that at random every couple minutes...or my car has even gone months without doing it and then all of a sudden its back! hopefully this thread will yield some answers

i think the canister is under the hood, honsestly i dont think it's the evap because the components are under the hood, it probably is the fuel pump, take out the rear seats and listen to the pump

I have a 00 ek and it did it since day 1. I took it to three different dealerships no one could give me a valid answer all said it was normal. I have 108k miles on it now still does it. At random times its the craziest thing. almost sounds like fuel pump priming.

it is NOT the fuel pump.. I have ripped my rear seat out before and waited for this sound. NOT the fuel pump. And it sounds nothing like a fuel pump priming... this is a lot higher pitched, if your fuel pump sounds like this you need to get that checked

Yeah i was really lucky to capture it on video. I had tried before, but i would find myself laying there for a long time with no success.
I will check out my EVAP stuff tomorrow and see if i find anything...
(Looks like i shed some light on an issue lots of ppl have but nobody had the proof of it till now)
