Default 99 EK SI -> Loud Squeeking Noise When Starting up the Car. Help!?

One of my friends who owns a 99 ek SI wanted me to ask the h-t community about his little problem. Everytime he starts his car, it makes a loud squeeking/screeching noise for a few seconds. If he revs it right away, the noise goes away. We already know it has to do something with the belts.... but is this noise a common problem on the 99+ Si's? Does it mean the belts are too tight or too lose? if so, which one's should he check? Basically, what can he do to make the squeeking stop.

Thanks in Advance everyone!

First check to make sure all belts have good tension! Then check to see if they have any age cracks! Have you just changed the belts? IF not i'd say depending on where you are climate wise they may have begun to crack or wear! Honda recommends almost every 90k they be changed unless they fail sooner! But for the most part they last that long!

It's one of your belts. Spray some belt dressing on there and see if it calms down.

I wouldnt go the belt dressing route! It is just temporary! You dont wanna loose the alt belt in BFE and be screwed!

thanks for the help so far.... so does too much tension on the belt causes it to squeek? I'll have to ask my friend to see when the timing belt was replaced as well as the other belts....

It could be the PS or alternator. And yes it the tension does cause a problem in certain cases.

if the belts are old, the squeeking/squeeling means its time to change them. but if they're new then it's probably a tension problem.
