Default Fuel Gauge Malfunction

I tried searching for answers related to my problem but didn't come across anything... Cuz actually, my problem is really weird. I'll try to describe it the best I can...

Okay so ever since about a year and a half ago, my fuel gauge stopped working. What I mean by that is that it wgoes WAY WAY past F (as far as the needle can literally go) and stays there, pretty much however long it feels like. Sometimes it will drop back down and read the actual fuel amount, sometimes not. It's all random.

But lately with the cold weather, when I start the car, the needle starts dropping and reads the correct fuel amount. And when I get driving, the needle will ONLY go way past F again if I drive over half throttle. So I pretty much have to drive granny style to get the needle to read right. Then once I got WOT or over half throttle, the needle INSTANTLY starts to go back up. Now after a while of driving, even under half throttle, the needle randomly goes back up on its own.

Now during the summer and all, it pretty much stays way past F 97% of the time. It very rarely and randomly comes back down.

Ideas?

Broken gauge. I think you can buy a new cluster and swap it out, not sure though. What car is this?

what you are describing soudns a lot like a bad connection in the cluster. try a different cluster or different fuel gauge.

If you know how to solder well or know someone that can, pull it out and check for bad solder connections.

No I have not tried a different cluster. I don't have the money to buy a new one (even if they are $5, I can't afford to spend any right now) and I don't know of anyone local that can let me borrow theirs.

I guess the only way to really find out is to try huh. This'll remain a mystery to me then for a while...

if you have the ability to use a volt meter and have access to one I can step you though how to check if the signal is getting to the cluster. Then you can be sure that's the problem...
