Front End Clunk
For a couple months now I have had a clunk in front of my car. Up until today I could not tell where it was coming from.
Today I took a right turn, powered through it and heard a single clunk coming from the drivers(left) wheel area. This same clunk (albeit quieter) will happen sometimes when I back out (nice and slow, not ripping out) of a parking spot or down the driveway.
I recently replaced my drivers half shaft because the old one broke. And I really don't remember hearing this noise before replacing it. But I got a brand new axle, so I don't know how it can be that.
I am pretty confindent that it isnt any of my ball joints, they've all been replaced within 10k miles. I have no idea what it could be and I hope any of you guys have input because i am at a loss
Thanks
Oh Yea.
Its a 00 EM1 with a B18C GSR swap (motor only still using SI trans)

Re: Front End Clunk
What suspension upgrades do you have?
When I had clunks it was my passenger shaft (stupid me put my dummy in the front)
> Check the shock tower that the three bolts are tight and the bushing isn't worn
> jack up car shake wheel with your hands on 3-9 and 6-12.
(3-9 shake test for tie rod quality, 6-12 shake test for wheel bearing quality)
> remove tire, inspect wheel for damage
> twist drive shaft lightly to test for play
... etc; etc; etc;
Honestly, the best way to check for a sound is to just shake everything, because there's no reason for any suspension part to have such play.

Re: Front End Clunk
Thanks for the responses.
Yesterday I took another whack at is and shook everything as much as I could. I found that when one wheel was on the ground and other in the air and there was the weight of the car on one wheel, I heard a clunk when I moved the steering wheel back and fourth.
Which means it could be inner/outer tie rods(Maybe rack, but let hope not...); but why would i only hear a clunk going through a right turn. in the left side.
Not through a slalom...(or even left turn)?
I might just replace the inner/outer tie rods for the sake of keeping things new.
Its not like this knock is the end of the world; but the idea of not knowing whats making it is driving me crazy
If that info helps anyone identify this issue; that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Front End Clunk
Seems like you missed an opportunity to pinpoint the precise source of the clunk noise.

Re: Front End Clunk
If there's no play in the tie rods then there would be no reason to replace them. If you had it jacked up and could hear the clunk then find where it's coming from. It's not rocket science.
