Exhaust fires come from unburnt fuel passing through the engine and into the exhaust manifold, and then combusting in the exhaust piping.

did you mess with your timing at all? a stock motor should not be running rich enough to drop cherries.. not even close. turbo motors that arent tuned are known for this..

wouldent a untuned turbo motor be running lean due to the excess of air?

Usually you tune turbo motors a bit richer until they're professionally tuned. Running richer lowers your chance of throwing a rod or some other catostrophic failure.

At OP:
You're running too rich, sounds like your timing is off, fuel is dripping into the EM where gravity is pulling it down to the tailpipe where the hot *** tail pipe is combusting it making it backfire. Set your timing to TDC.
